Anyone know of a good screen video recording application?

I want to send some instructions to someone on how to do something in an application. It will be a lot easier if I can video myself doing it and send them the video file.
Anyone know of some free software to do this?
Preferably one where I could write annotations on the video too.
Thanks

I've used http://camstudio.org/ a couple of times, free and east to use.Laters

What about Skype? Saves you sending a hefty mpeg.

Adobe Captivate - you can download a 30 day free trial.0

Won't Windows Movie Maker (comes free in Windows - Start Button >>> All Programs >>> Windows Movie Maker >>> Import from Digital Video Camera) do the job?
I don't think you can put captions on easily but hell, it's worth a try as it's free and you've already got it.0 -
Cool. Just tried that and it seems to work well. Couldn't figure out the annotation bit.I've used http://camstudio.org/ a couple of times, free and east to use.0 -
Hi Mr_fishbulb
Found these YouTube tutorials on putting annotations on Camstudio productions
Dunno if of any help to you however if you click the link you can see a range to choose from
Cannot recommend which one out of them all is the best because never used Camstudio

There is also a free screen capture program called wink that allows you to record what you've done and annotate it. doesn't make massive files when you tell it to capture at each click or something rather than 10fps or whatever as a 'movie' style recording would. Used it for my GCSE IT coursework and it did the trick with very tight file size limits imposed by the exam boards. Exports to swf video object if I remember correctly (shockwave flash)0

Just for the sake of completeness I will include NCH Debut video capture software. There is a free version if you Google it. As far as I know you cannot add annotations but it has other qualities. It is very modifiable and gives the user the option of adjusting it to find a compromise between file length and picture quality. Hours of endless fun. Gmail allow 25M attachments and after fiddling with Debut I have sent 20 minute video emails successfully.
Mostly the emails I send are not 20 minutes long so I don't feel I am limited in any way and in an email you can always send text as well as the video attachment. It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.0 -
