Why would the OP report it as stolen,
He believes himself to be the registered keeper + the police can not "return" stolen property without a court order establishing it was stolen.
We may only have half the tale, but they should have impounded it and the question of ownership decided by a judge.[/QUOTE]

May be the registered keeper but that has nothing to do with ownership.
The original loser is the owner, the subsequent buyer has no claim to it.

There is a bit of a scam going down where folk get a mate sell the car using a duplicate registration certificate and details to a dealer for cash, then the "real owner" later claims it has been stolen whilst he was away on some out of the country business by "persons unknown" , the police been too lazy, just return the vehicle to the scammer. Nets a nice little cash loot and they get the car back.

did that come with any insurance? i'm sure some of them do cover you incase they're wrong.

I have checked this but at the time I bought the vehicle it wasn't reported as stolen- therefore the company I used to check the background of the vehicle would obviously not be aware I was buying a stolen vehicle and therefore there is no liability with this company. It was reported as stolen some 4 months after being in my ownership. Ultimately I think I've become involved in some form of fraud perhaps? where the vehicle changes ownership several times- vehicle was a year old when I bought it and had two previous owners and I know it had been on another forecourt before ending up at the garage from where I bought it- remember traders don't register themselves on the V5 so I don't know how many traders had this before I bought it.
were you reimbursed for these before you found out the car was stolen? you still had to pay for those whether you got a stolen car or not.

I haven't been reimbursed whatsoever yet. I was asking if I would be reimbursed for the costs I incurred in obtaining the vehicle if I took the garage to court.

Says who? They do it every day.
Really? Are you sure about that?

Normally, when the police discover stolen goods they are kept as evidence.
Where do you get your facts from?

I could ask you the same question. ;)

    Really?

So they keep every stolen car in case they find an offender. No they photograph it fingerprint it and return it.

If you say so, do you have anything to support your claim as so far all you have done is give bad advice.

Yes thanks, It's called Knowledge, something you quite obviously lack .

Nothing to do with Police or Bank, it's the dealer you should be chasing. I wonder why your check (and presumeably theirs) came back clean though.

At the time I purchased the vehicle it had not been reported as stolen.

Are you sure they were proper policemen?

you said they returned it to the person who reported it stolen, but unless it's only just been reported stolen then it'd belong to the insurance company as the previous owner has been paid out.

i mean that until you discovered the car was stolen you were happy to pay the costs you mentioned so they were expenses you'd have paid whether the car was stolen or not... so they may not be refundable.

I'm not sure entirely as the police haven't been forthcoming with how the vehicle was stolen but it has been suggested to me that I've become the victim of a fraud and what you've suggested could be true.
