You had a chance to get a feel for it in the store, no ones fault you didnt feel it wasnt right then as you could have saved yourself the money. Nothing wrong with what halfords have said, its they're policy since nothing was wrong with the bike. You either get to like it or sell it at a loss.
  • Hi there, I used to work at Halfords and as a rule once a bike had been taken, as soon as it wad ridden we would not exchange/refund the bike as it couldn't have been sold as new. The problems you mention are quick fixes, unless of corse you bought their entry level, cheap brand if bike called trax, if thus is the case you simply cannot expect any decent quality for the price you paid.
Regarding the test ride no store would ever offer one on two grounds, firstly h&s, secondly what happens if on the ride you damage the bike? They would be left with a nackered bike. Imagine the thousands of customers each week who would push for test rides, the amount of damaged bikes would be ridiculous!
They have bikes on display for a reason, you get a feel for the quality of the bike before you buy it. It would feel cheap and nasty in a shop just like it dies on your drive, so there us no cause for refund there.
Lastly, appeal to their better nature, you have made a mistake, it's not their fault, explain that you do need a bike but really are not satisfied with the quality of the one purchased. Offer to trade up to the next brand, and pay the difference, they may do it, they may not. They certainly don't have to, so act nicely(you cone across decently on here so have no doubt you would instore) and see what happens!

Was it a flat-pack bike assembled by yourself or was it pre-assembled by Halfords?

How much did it cost? Not much consolation, but if it's a no-name Bicycle Shaped Object then it probably will feel cheap and not well-built.

The first thing to do when you buy a new bike is to take it to a local independent bike shop, they'll set it up perfectly for a small fee (usually ~£30), Also I'd recommend buying from a local as they will be more knowledgeable and most allow test rides.
If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.

No, but in the store the manager said that the person who served me should have gave me the option.

That was my exact point, why does that quote/statement have anything to do with me returning a product that I am not happy with. I was not trying to be smart at all.

What exactly are you doing on here gordkin ? Looking for an argument? Because you are not really a massive help to be fair.

If there is anyone out there with knowledge in this area I would be ever so grateful to hear from you.

You had ample opportunity to examine the bike instore Y/N?. If you chose not to do so ...guess who is to blame?....I make no apologies if that is not what you want to hear.

Car dealers seem to manage okay, on machines far more valuable that a bike.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

The bike I bought from halfords set up by the expert, well the handlebars pulled out, the whole lot, which was fun when riding down the hill at 20 mph.

My post was meant with sarcasm, although since MSE doesn't have a sarcasm smilie, was hoping the wink would be sufficient. Seems I was wrong :)
