Returning a bike to Halfords

Options
I recently bought a mountain bike from Halfords (today) and am not happy with it at all.

I don't know my rights when it comes to taking items back, but I want to return the bike. There's no faults as such, so I'm not sure if they'll refund the price.

The bike is unmarked and I've literally just rode it down my drive to test it out. It just didn't feel right when riding it but I don't think they'll take that as a viable excuse.

I'm just wondering whether there's anyone out there with knowledge when it comes to returning items or someone who's even worked in a bicycle shop.

Thanks in advance. . .

  • It feels cheap and not well built. The breaks don't work, the gears clank . . .

I know that they can be adjusted but I don't like the bike now.
  • 2 minute fixes, you had the opportunity to see the bike in Halfords before you bought it.

What kind of bike was it and how much?

You have no statutory right of return to a shop if you simply change your mind - UNLESS the store operates a return policy as this would then form part of your contract with them.

Just incase you are still thinking about returning it this is taken from the Halfords website:-
    Returns Policy
We hope that you will be happy with your Halfords purchase. However if you need to return any item we will happily refund or exchange it, provided it is within 28 days of delivery, in its original packaging and with proof of purchase.

(Please note that STORE policy may be different)

But, it does go on to state:-
The easiest and quickest way to return your item or items is to take them to your local Halfords store for a replacement or refund along with your copy invoice as proof of purchase. Unfortunately, Halfords stores are not able to accept returns for products delivered direct from the manufacturer, Gift Vouchers, Driver Safety Aids, Nitro Cars, Made to Measure items, items cut to length or Parking Sensors.

Please note: Satellite Navigation systems/units also CANNOT be returned to stores unless they are returned complete in all their original packaging, with ALL security seals still intact.

Items returned without proof of purchase may only be exchanged at the Store Manager's discretion.

Easiest way would be to call the store and ask ;)

  • Thanks everyone. Here's a lil-update,

I took the bike back into the store and to cut a long story short, they wouldn't give me a refund or a credit note. I am not happy with the decision but what can I do about it? I don't know my rights. Or if I even have any what so ever

They said they will give it a once-over and I can pick it up tomorrow. To be honest even if they do make it work perfectly I don't want the bike.

Does anyone know if there is anyway at all that I would be able to ge a refund or even a credit note.

Why.......? Buyer remorse? Would you buy your returned used second hand bike at full price?
  • Well I guess you could say there's a little buyer remorse but it's deeper than that. I don't actually like the product now I have had it at home. You can't really get the feel for something whilst it's in a store. I mean they didn't even offer me a test ride.

"Would you buy your returned used second hand bike at full price?" what's that got to do with the price of cheese?

Did you ask for a test ride?

Nothing to do with the price of cheese...but more to do with the price of second hand bikes...why not answer instead of trying (and failing) to be smart?

Because if Halfords offer a full refund, the then have a second-hand bike in their store that they can't sell for full price.

No, but in the store the manager said that the person who served me should have gave me the option.

That was my exact point, why does that quote/statement have anything to do with me returning a product that I am not happy with. I was not trying to be smart at all.

What exactly are you doing on here gordkin ? Looking for an argument? Because you are not really a massive help to be fair.

If there is anyone out there with knowledge in this area I would be ever so grateful to hear from you.

Does it state on your receipt anything regarding a "Returns Policy"?

If there is nothing then (assuming that there is no other documented returns policy that formed part of your contract when you purchased the bike) you have NO statutory rights to return the bike unless it is faulty.
