Broadband router speed question

Hiya, can anyone help with this:
A friend/neighbour asked me and I don't know the answer. They have set up a wireless router on their broadband internet connection but are getting only 11mbps capacity and the router manufacturer has confirmed that that is the max for the card in their model of router; but there are other routers that advertise greater capacity. If my neighbour upgrades/changes the router what is the max mbps that can be expected over an ADSL bt line?

Don't get confused between your ADSL speed and your Wireless network speed. They are different things.

Many recent wireless routers are up to 54Mb, you can get some new faster routers with over double that. In any case, the card in the laptop/PC would have to be the same specification as the router in order to utilise the fastest possible speed.

If it's an ADSL MAx BB connection. The maximum speed is up to 8mbps (actually nearer 6.5mbps maximum acheivable speed). Changing routers wont make too much of a difference to BB speed. It will make a difference if a lot of data is transfered between computers on the same network though.

And you also will not get 54MBps with the newer one either.

Wireless connection traffic includes an awful lot of error correctiontraffic, so even with an excellent signal level you will only get about 30MBps at best. So your 11MBps will be less as well.

As above, dont mix up ADSL Boradband speed and the wireless speed.
