  • Have a look on these points first :-

What all you need to be a successful locksmith?

It is not very frequently that the locksmiths are called in for their services. The occupation of the locksmith is not easy to practice. You might be called at odd hours and at far flung places. However, if you have indeed decided to take this up as your profession, here are some of the tips on how can you be successful in your work:

    * Add diversity of operability: This means that you shall be an expert in more than one field of this trade. The more diversified expertise you have, the more successful you will be because the less you will be at mercy of your limited expertise. You can even go for more providing the installation services to increase the area of operation of your services.

    * Select your location carefully: The localities with high density of populations are the best choice since the more are the number of the people, the more the residential and commercial spaces and the more are the automotives. Therefore, more are the chances of your being called again and again. The next important consideration of opening a locksmith business is that of the number of competitors. But, that is not significant because competition will be expected where there is good chance of generating business.
    * Get yourself professional training and certificate: By doing the course, you will not only be gaining good practical training and learn the different tools of operations but will also be enhancing your credibility.
    * Be a member of some reputed professional body of locksmiths of your state: This is again for the purpose of generating more business and enabling clients find you.
    * Customer service: If your customer service is good or exceptional, then you will be able to create a difference among the competitors. You will have more references and references work wonders in this field. Courtesy, punctuality, flexible time hours and longer range of service will help you immensely to be more successful than the others. Ability to work and handle the panicky and emergent situations will immensely increase your reputation as an effective Locksmith
    * Keep all your tools and equipment always at one place: If you forget to take required equipment or the same is not there in your kit, then it speaks volumes about your unprofessional attitude towards this work. And, if the situation is emergent and you do not have the tools, then it is like killing your own livelihood and extremely frustrating for the customer.
    * Make referral arrangements: If you specialize in any one area of locksmiths operations and the customer requires some other expertise, then you shall have a network of close locksmiths who would provide exclusive expert services to the clients and, within themselves, have a fixed commission system for providing references. So, the aim is not to let the customer go away from your own network. Many would deride this service but this is right on the business principles and when you are not referring any wrong person to the client.

First of all you should know that there are different categories of locksmiths, such as – commercial (working from a store), mobile (working from a vehicle or a mobile workstation), institutional (working for an institution), and investigational (forensic locksmiths).
You may also find some who specialize in one aspect of the profession such as a master key system specialist, safe technician or automotive locksmiths as well as general area of expertise such as commercial/industrial/residential or automotive. There are some points which one has to remember before hiring a locksmith:
    * If it is the first time that you are hiring a professional locksmith, then it would be better to hire a modern day locksmith who uses the latest equipments in his work. Since the locks which are available in the market today come with complex mechanisms, having the latest gadgets to help them deal with problems with security fixtures would be a good idea.
    * Check and see whether the locksmith expert has a physical address. This is important since it has been found out that 92% of locksmiths that appear on search engine maps do not actually exist. Make sure the locksmith is licensed to do work in your county.
    * Ensure that the locksmith comes with all the tools required in his work. The moment you see him coming in with just a drilling machine, stop him from doing the job. This is because, chances are there that he will just drill through the lock. A good locksmith will first try picking and bumping the lock before drilling through it.
    * It is good to inquire about a master key. This key is one which fits in each and every lock in the house. This saves the time and hassle of carrying a bunch of keys at the same time. A good locksmith should be able to provide you with a master key.
Locks are used to secure rooms, cabinets, buildings and certain storage facilities. Though most locks will open with a key, some locks require you to know specific combinations or codes. The original locksmiths were proficient in the science of making as well as defeating locks. The locksmith may be viewed as one of the first security engineers and the lock pick as the first tool of breaking through that security. Since most of these individuals were blacksmiths who made locks, they came to be known as locksmiths.
Nowadays, locksmith services and the locksmith tools have all undergone tremendous technological advances and sometimes it may seem a bit odd referring to an electronics security specialist as a provider of locksmith services but there is no other technical term. Our modern locksmiths perform electronic lock servicing that ranges from the locks on vehicles with transponders to personal assets of all types including homes, safes, and so on. The locksmith services however do not merely cover installing the various security features. A good locksmith is meant to assess the risk level of what needs to be secured as well as other factors like location, access rights, and so forth, and based on that the optimal security measures are recommended. The locksmith tool might be an entire suite of various security features depending on the level of security desired. Of course there are times when the property being secured will not have some layers because each layer of security costs a bit extra.
Locksmiths may operate from their own premises, be mobile, could be employed by a security agency, or they could be forensic investigators. They may also choose specialization in a specific type of locksmith service like safe technician, security consultant, and so on. Different specializations come with different skills and they lead to different trades. Most often though, certifications from manufacturers or locksmith associations are more acceptable than training certificates. Some locksmiths often misuse the term Master Locksmith as their qualifications are mostly training certificates. Different countries have different minimum requirements for anyone to qualify as a Master Locksmith. What is well recognized among all locksmiths is that a truly determined person who has the skills, knowledge, time, and unlimited resources will eventually manage to break any lock. That is why there are always secondary features installed by locksmiths that serve as deterents to people with malicious intent to provide a high degree of security for buildings, documents, personal assets, and other valuable or crucial objects.

  • runlocallocksmi / Ron why have you registered two accounts?

You need permission to post here as a business. And you're not gonna drum up much business for a locksmith in Arizona by posting on a British internet forum!

Posting huge blocks of text isn't exactly conducive to easy-reading either. :)

    Hi Ron

Just FYI, you are not allowed to put contact details to advertise yourself in your post; the forum mods will remove it if you don't. Also, this is a UK forum, so your USA address and number won't be relevant for 99.9% of people on here. :)

just look here http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=588 for free manuals and visit those pages and read up to understand.

Also use youtube to see more visual explanations and methods.

Then try and both bypass and pick your own front door. Then either purchase old locks, or buy new ones.

Then go on the courses to fill in missing bits.

Uxbridge college once did a cctv and alarm installation course. think it was part time over two years ? Think it is more profitable:)
  • Let me just say, DO NOT try picking or messing with locks that are in use, if you mess them up (yes i have seen this happen) you can either be left with a door that you cannot secure, or on the extreme, you can be left with a door that will not open from the inside due to a lock being wrecked, and if a fire breaks out, your gonna be in a pickle, dont listen to people that say "i've picked mine lots of times and everything is ok" YOU could be the one who wrecks the lock, get some old practice locks, ebay is full of them, you can also visit a double glazing place and ask if you can have or buy some of the old locks.
There are plenty of forums out there with some great info and videos, the videos show you how the lock is opened, not many will tell you what is going on inside the locks and what the picker is doing and feeling for, there are plenty of decent courses out there but also some courses are not so good, dont listen to this rubbish in adverts where you can make 1000,s a week, its not true, the only people making 1000,s a week are speciality guys and those running courses.
Before you spend your hard earned cash on a course, first find out what you want to learn, try and get info on the course (many forums will tell you info abt them,) some of it may be wrong, but dont go and throw away the best part of 2 grand for a 3-5 day course if its not what you want.
These courses cannot make you a locksmith, you cannot train in 3-5 days and call yourself one, even the C&G certificate is useless, there is no recognised qualification for a locksmith, joe bloggs the butcher can call himself one if he likes, all the courses learn you is the basics of how to pick/bypass locks, you have to continue to practice to improve your skill, the money and jobs dont suddenly start to flow once you have finished training, that 2 grand training cost is not the only expense you have to lay out.
The things you have to decide is, what type of lockie do i want to start off to be? get the tools for that first, then theres vehicle costs, stock, insurance, and advertising, its not cheap.
I'm not trying to put anyone off from becoming a lockie, but most people dont realise what monetary outlay goes with it.
So before you part with your cash, do some trawling first, read some, then read some more, ask questions, find out what a certain course is going to offer you, its no good paying for a course that does a day or two on auto's if your only interested in becoming a domestic only locksmith, auto's are another thing, that can be the one that costs you the most.
I wont continue anymore as this post is long enough.
Read up on stuff, theres lots of info out there, think what you want to learn, and dont try to run before you can walk
and remember, some of these videos on you tube make it look easy, most are simple locks, others are done by guys who know what they are doing.
  • Let me just say that I agree with 'What The' 100%. He is offering great advice. The outlay can be quite high, but you specialise on certain locks to start with, and build both your knowledge and tool range up as you go along. There are NO recognised qualifications for locksmiths to date, nor even city and guilds, but I believe this is going to change in the not to distant future. Good luck.

By the way, can anyone recommend Matrix Locksmiths training in London, because I'm also looking for a training provider for someone, I don't have the time to train myself and I don't think I have enough experience to do so. Any refs or recommended alternatives would be considered. Thanks All.
