materials for plastering a wall?

we had damp in my daughter's bedroom and we have had the work done and could anyone tell me how much of the following would have been needed for a wall about 8feet wide normal bedroom height:

bags of sand
bags of cement
bags of bonding
babs of thistle
tubs of pva
tub of water proofer

about 4feet had to betaken back to the original brick.

thanks

As a matter of interest why do you need to know?

I think I am being taken for a mug! 2 guys, one in his 70's, they have been mending slates on my roof for the last 10 years and I get on with them really well and when they came to fix a leak which was 1 tile I said I was going to get the wall plastered and they offered to do it. In the past I have had 4 walls in the kitchen replastered & a wall rendered and skimmed plus ceiling skimmed in my bedroom, so have an idea of cost. But what they are charging seems really high.

I have asked for an itemised invoice and it has :
    8 bags Sand
    2 Bages cement
    2 bags bonding
    2 bags of thistle
    1 tub of PVA
    1 tub of Water proofer

don't want to say how much they charged wondered what others on here would expect to pay first.

    Thanks

He put materials for £120.00 that did include 2 slates ( this was the first that I knew about them & 2 tubes of silicon?)

37 hours labour. Grand total £565

Sorry edited to say that they worked on the plastering from 9am to about 2pm one day and about the same another day.

No more than 1-2 hours for fixing the leak

You've overpaid because you used someone who isn't a plasterer and he's charged you on hourly rates basis. 40 man hours is far too long for that job. He's taken too long to do the job and you've allowed him to do it on an hourly rate - its as simple as that.

Hi, the older guy is a qualified plasterer and the problem is they were not there as long as he has said. For example he has put 3 hours for examine leak in bedroom, 5 mins tops.

So do people think the quantities he has quoted would be what is expected for a wall no more than 4 metres wide? I never saw 8 bags of sand being mixed aoutside my back door but he may have?

Mmm - I'm dropping off the fence a bit towards your side now. Its too long IMHO and you should really have got a fixed price quote out of him for the job. Did he dispose of the arisings within the price?

A bag of sand doesn't go very far in reality when its nice and wet. If he only used 7 and a bit he'll still charge for 8 if thats what he had to buy to do the job.

You worry me with your dimensions TBH. Just under 6 square metres seems to have gone up to 9 and three quartersin the space of a few posts.

Even if he did buy fron Wickes it would not be unreasonable for him to put a 15 - 20% handling charge on materials. Perhaps you should ask him to justify the hours though.

Very expensive compared to the work I've had done e.g. ~£600 for an entire kitchen. It was done in a day.

sounds alot..i paid £460 at kent prices for plastering our bathroom to a good standard...walls and ceiling with about half of it back to blockwork. Started before 9am and had cleared up and gone by 3pm including lunch break and tea breaks...plasterer and an apprentice.

The breakdown isn't as important really as the final price. I assume you didn't ask for a quote up front...make sure you do next time. I'd used our plasterers before (was a lucky "dart in the yellow pages pick" originally!) but i still got them round to give me a quote before i gave them the job.

What basecoat and finish in six hours ? . Sounds very fast !
