eon gas readings

i have been a customer of eon since 2005, they have just rung me up to say that i have been underpaying since then!this is because of their mistake, they have been taking our readings as 4 digits when it should have been 5 digit readings?! what i cant get my head round is that when you look on the net on how to take a gas reading, it says to ignore the red dial? has anyone else had the same problem? they have warned me i may get a large bill to pay for the underpayment..........their mistake!!

Is it possibly the other way arround? As 4 digit readings are old imperial meters and 5 digit ones are modern metric meters. Imperial meters measure in hundreds of cubic feet, while metric use cubic meters. A hundred cubic feet is much larger than a cubic meter, so if they had been taking the readings as 4 digits when they should have been five then they would have overcharged you massively, not undercharged...

Question for you. Can you prove *exactly* what was said on the phone?

Ask for the explanation in writing (or email) and take it from there. There *will* be an explanation, what it is and in who's favour I cannot speculate, but if you are dissatisfied with the explanation (or lack of explanation) raise a complaint in writing (or by email) strictly in accordance with the Eon complaints procedure. If you remain dissatisfied on "final" response, or after 8 weeks (whichever occurs first) you are entitled to ask the Energy Ombudsman to investigate the issue.

I strongly recommend you decline to discuss any phone response to the complaint but insist on a written (or email) response.

Is what they are saying correct ? What does it show on your meter, "100's cu.ft" or cu.m / m3. What does it show on your bill ? Give us some meter readings figures from your bills and someone will work out what is going on.

If the first digit on the meter is a 0 that still counts as one of the five digits on a 5 dial meter. You always ignore the read reading.
  • thanks for all your helpful information. my readings have always been 4 digits, but they have said they should be 5. as for an explanation from eon, this wasnt forthcoming. i argued my case, explaining that what they are telling me doesnt add up. someone from eon is phoning me back on tuesday to explain more, and give me my new bill?!

the present reading is 6164 (4 digits) but they have insisted on 61645 (5 digits) reading, which includes the red number. our meter is measured in cubic feet.

i have requested a complaint be logged because, it doesnt make sense to me, no matter what way i look at it?!

check they are supplyng the right meter, on your gas meter there will be a serial no(msn), make a not of it and call eon to see if that is the one they are billing you for, if the msn they have differs to yours, all they have said is inaccurate.

It looks as if you have an imperial meter and that they are possibly billing you as a metric meter. If that is the case then you have definitely underpaid.

To check this could you post some details from a bill, what we want is a start and end meter reading and the number of kwh that they have converted the difference to. Someone will then tell you how you have been billed.

That is "true" but in such case "almost certainly" the Billing Code would apply (supplier or industry error) disallowing "backbilling" for energy supplied more than 12 months prior.

Unfortunately, they must have been treating those readings as 06150 and 06153 as that is the kWh for three units on a five dial metric meter. As has been said above, this makes it very likely that you have underpaid quite heavily over time...
