I have to say that for a weekend break we found it a tad boring, and certainly for any longer you would struggle to be entertained.0

Actually the river is extremely clean - so much so that wild salmon is netted from it daily and sold in the English Market which my chum Rick Stein has declared the best covered market in Europe in a city nominated recently by Lonely Planet as one of the top ten places in the world to visit.
For a small city in a country ravaged by the recession Cork is actually quite a pleasant place to visit which I do on a weekly basis.
You've just got to know where to look for the good spots.
I have to agree with the comment that followed your post, I travel a LOT
and realise not everywhere can have a Taj Mahal or Angkor Wat but I find Cork bland and boring. I deem water to be clean if I stand a chance of seeing through it not by the amount of sh*t per million parts.
I didn't say that Cork is actually unpleasant but I saw the line from the lonely planet and I'm still laughing - why? My top ten would not include Cork, My top ten in Co. Cork might not actually include Cork. What is there to see of real interest in Cork city???? if you know the good spots tell us where they are!
I'll be over there a couple of times in October from France, will the weather captivate me, will the food excite places the French fail to reach or will I just feel
 ripped off as usual?
As for the "best covered market in Europe" - what a joke, I can think of any number between cork and the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul (31 thousand square meters with hundreds of domes).
Tell us (please) what is there to actually see in Cork City? No offence Nobjocki but if I'm missing something worthy of the looney Planets discription please let us know.
Failing that I might see you in Jury's for a pint in October -It's your round I'm from Yorkshire.0

I agree, we travel a lot too, and Cork was perfectly pleasant, with enough to while away a weekend, but would certainly not be in my top ten or even twenty of must see places. It was a typical market town, of the type which abound in Yorkshire, Lancashire, in fact all over the Uk, pleasant, but unremarkable.0

Like most tourist destinations the best places are kept secret from the visitors.;)
As I said to the OP Cork is an excellent location for a short stay. It's easy to get to,safe and a useful springboard for touring West Cork,Cobh and Kinsale.
You're entitled to your opinions about the English Market but they're not shared by the majority of leading food experts and chefs and the quality of the water in the River Lee is simply a matter of fact.
If you're prepared to come to Cork with an open mind and a willingness to engage with the locals it's a very friendly place - hang on a minute, what am I saying, you're from Yorkshire.:D

From someone who was born in cork, I can safely say its a dump tbh its the worst place in Eire imo to visit!
Kinsale is very nice, can feel full of tourists at busy times of the year though, but should be a little quieter in September.
One thing I can recommend about cork, a chinese restaurant called "The Pearl River" excellent portions and cheap, plus the steaks are to die for, can't remember where exactly it is in the city as its been a while since I was last there, but everyone there knows it so ask around.
On your own in Cork you will be welcomed by the locals, its when you're in groups of English lads that you tend to get into trouble;)
Lovely place Eire just you need more than 3 days to fully experience it:D0

Wow....didn't expect so many comments. I am delighted to have so much input. I would much rather meet locals than tourists. Local people always know where to go, what to see , where the best craic is etc.
Coming from Edinburgh I have seen more than enough tourists...lol. I have to work with em too !
Bob...checked the bus,but will have to be taxi as bus will have stopped running by the time I get there.
I plan to see as much of that part of Eire as is possible, in fact I could stay a bit longer instead of heading up to Dublin (again) if I like it.
Thanks to everyone for their input and links.0

Most East Europeans left several years ago to work on the Olympic site in London.:D0
