Three days is plenty, been then many many many times and can't see why people rate it. Don't forget your brolly, Damart underwear and plastic mack.
  • Plenty of Bar meal things at lunch-time but cheaper meals in the evenings not easy to find if your on a budget.
  • Not answering your specific original question, but ...

... don't overlook at trip to Cobh: http://www.cork-guide.ie/cobh.htm

It's many years since I was in the area, but it's Cobh and Kinsale that I remember more than Cork itself. Having said that, I DID enjoy Cork ... which is high praise from someone who's not really a 'city person'!
  • Thank you - you've just brought back some lovely memories; couldn't recall the name, but knew there were bells and a great view involved ...

    Thanks to google:

I must be missing something. I travel to Cork a lot (FR901 arrived 7.40am ish always miserable & raining).
What is so interesting about overpriced dowdy Cork? Not the rest of Ireland but Cork - the city.
The 'English market' - its a small indoor market with overpriced food.
The art gallery, don't blink you'll miss it.
The shops, over-prices and closing down before your eyes.
    The dirty river.
The overpriced and usually very bland food (I DID NOT SAY ALWAYS).
The overpriced transport from the airport.
    The bl**dy terrible weather
Blarney castle - not in Cork and nothing to write home about.
The beer, it's 1/3 cheaper in Waterford.

What have I missed in the city of Cork?

20 mins max if the traffic on the Kinsale road roundabout is only very bad not terrible. 15 mins max out of hours. There is an expensive but good bus service if only one travelling but 2 or more a taxi is better value. It's about 6km that's all.

Bus stop is right outside the terminal building at the right hand end (as you're facing the exit doors). You can buy your ticket from a machine there if it's working or onboard - get grumpy if you give them more than 10 euro note.

Actually the river is extremely clean - so much so that wild salmon is netted from it daily and sold in the English Market which my chum Rick Stein has declared the best covered market in Europe in a city nominated recently by Lonely Planet as one of the top ten places in the world to visit.

For a small city in a country ravaged by the recession Cork is actually quite a pleasant place to visit which I do on a weekly basis.

You've just got to know where to look for the good spots.
