I'll consider this if I have any more problems ... thanks. In the meantime, with everything running quickly and smoothly, I'll stick with Norton. If it ain't broken, why bother fixing it. Exactly

Congrats on sorting your own problems Mimijane and ignoring the doom mongers....

I agree, I may not like nortons but if you are happy with it and it works then live and let live is my motto :)

  • If your computer was acting sluggish it could have been doing a scan of your hard drive - but agree with everyone else ditch it in favour of a large number of other software soloutions.

That was my initial thought, but changed my mind when it was still sluggish after a few hours! No point in wasting money if it's working fine now though.

  • depending on the size of the hard drive and how many files it could possibly take a few hours - seen it scanning for ages on my fathers laptop before I got rid of it.

Well, whatever the problem was, it's not there any more and I can quickly surf/use my p.c. without any problems while it's scanning now. I can only think the initial problem was due to a "glitch" during installation the first time round. I'm quite happy with Norton now and have used it many times in the past, so will continue to use it unless, of course, it gives me any more problems.

If it continues to be slow (Norton reduces speed by 33%) then there are lots of FREE and better alternatives off the internet.

There is lots of info in the sticky listed at the top.

How many posts on different forums have I seen regarding Norton & McAfee products....about a thousand at a guess, its a pity that most people dont do a little bit of research into AV and security packages instead of following the rest of the sheep by using the two named above

Perhaps if people did do some research they would find that they are actually two of the worst products on the market. Not only do they have a poor detection rate(compaired to the best products)but they are full of 'bloatware', use far to many system resources & are sometimes a right pain to get rid of if you wish to uninstall it.

You only have to look on any proper Technical/Hardware/Software forums and you would see just rubbish they are ;)
