I agree. And to clarify, i'm referring to home-based business's ie. people who have a converted area of their home dedicated to running a business, an office for example.
Somebody with a laptop and an internet connection catching up on work clearly isn't a home based business.

Even if it is converted, as long as it is still clearly part of the home i.e. a bedroom and not covered with signage on the exterior, then it's still your home.
  • To everyone who's commented that a home isn't a workplace, and that it's not a public place, none of this washes with them.

I'm in the same position as the original poster, working alone at home and I gave them too much information when they called (not knowing the purpose of the call or that they were tape recording it).

They have insisted again and again that even if you're at home, as soon as you do any work, they consider it a commercial environment and you're liable for a licence. It says this on their website.

I too received invoices for nearly £400 and am being chased by their debt collection agency. (Who I suspect are not a separate organisation).

Their methods are unethical, the whole situation is ridiculous. I won't pay and I'm well prepared to go to court (out of which it will be laughed out I'm sure).

For anyone who works from home, don't even get into a conversation with them, don't confirm your details for them to send you an 'information pack' - it will turn out to be an invoice.

For anyone who's actually been in my position and managed to get rid of them, advice please?

You get rid of them like you get rid of any pests, you ignore them.
