Hi everyone who has taken an interest in this!
I started the thread below, in the this Forum, on 27 July. Here is the outcome.

My son received a call from Santander's fraud dept today, he will receive ALL his money back into his account tomorrow! In summary, this is the gist of the call as my son relayed it to me:
They asked him questions about the events of that evening which he repeated as in his complaint.
They advised him the times of the transactions on 21 June were 5 mins apart (as we suspected). They told him the transaction for 1,000 euros was out of order on the statement. My son was told this was actually the FIRST one that went through, and was honoured as he had enough credit. This is odd as it appears as the LAST transaction on his statement. He was told that this would be reimbursed now that they were satisfied it was fraudulent. They said that the other 3 fraudulent transactions for 100 euros would be reimbursed as a gesture of goodwill for their customer service failings. Part of the complaint was that my son was continually called by the bank to ask when he would put his account back into credit when it already was (he put it back into credit the day after the fraud was discovered). What is a complete shock is that they also told him there were failed attempts at a local ATM machine in Maspalomas on that evening too?!! This is really odd as the card was in my son's possession the whole time, I wish he had questioned them more about this, I am intrigued! Anyway, as you can imagine he is over the moon to get full reimbursement of his hard earned cash. He said they asked him if he would accept this and he said yes, he said he could have probably held out for more (for all the inconvenience, phone calls and taking time off work to go to the bank) but did not want to be greedy. I'm glad he did that as he can now draw a line under the whole saga. Very impressed to be honest that this has been concluded quite quickly. So a tip to one and all, don't use a Visa debit card abroad in a bar!! I would like to thank every single person on here who has offered advice.

That is an excellent result.
The Nationwide changed their tack and decided members now should advise them if going abroad. When I called them after my credit card was blocked, they said they needed told if it was a credit card, but not a debit card, "As that is you money and not ours". In other words they didn't give a stuff if your debit card was used fraudulently.0 -
I don't think anywhere is safe from cloning, the only solution to ensure your bank account is safe is not to have a debit card in the first place. But in this day and age how would you get money out the bank.
I think in terms of mitigating that risk the bank counter has to be the safest method, followed by the inside the branch ATM.0 -
that is fab news congrats0
