hello
I have joined n-power home team as it covers if your boiler breaks down etc and to qualify you need a boiler check.
Anyway last week n-power came by to do check only for the guy to tell me it cannot be done as he could not remove the boiler case as the cupboard that my boiler is in is stopping him removing it. I was told to remove the cupboard which the previous owner had built around the boiler to hide.
My lovely neighbours said they could possibly take a look at the cupboard but unfortunately when they came to look it was impossible and the only way to remove it was to damage it so they said they will try and take the boiler case off which came off easily enough
I then proceeded to call N-power and explained what we had done and they agreed to send over somebody to inspect the boiler.
However when another n-power engineer came he proceeded to tell me off and told me I had broken the law by asking my neighbour to take off the door of the boiler as it can only be done by a corgi engineer and that my neighbour can be prosecuted which shocked me and made me upset as we thought we were doing n-power a favour ad also to save me a bit of money as i only just returned to work after losing my job and unfortunately by taking the day off i don't get paid. I was told that the door was now broken (i cannot see this as my neighbour did not use any force but just unclipped some clips) and was told I had to pay £290 for a new boiler case which at the moment i don't have the money.
So now i am without hot water and face a bill and as my boiler has been playing up - sometimes the hot water just doesn't come on and if i switch the boiler off and on it comes back for 15 mins at a time so could face a massive bill of buying a new boiler
my question is is it illegal to take a boiler door off? have been literally sh*tting my self all day as i don't normally break the law and i really want my boiler to be sorted out but it can't be as N-power won't look at it until i purchase a new boiler door
i just want my boiler to be checked to see why my hot water goes off
i so don't understand laws on boilers etc- i really didn't know that i have now damaged it and i so cannot afford all of this
thanks

it is against the law to take the casing of the boiler unless you are gas safe registered.Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0 -
Welcome to the forum.
I am very surprised that he would have said a 'Corgi' engineer as they have been superceeded by 'Gas-Safe'.
There are some qualified Gas Safe engineers who contribute to this forum, but as far as I am aware the only restriction on unqualified person is that they must not disrupt any gas connection.0 -
What's the make and model of the boiler?
Without this info it is impossible to say what your neighbour could or shouldn't have done.0 -
You have to be gas safe registered to deal with any parts dealing with the flow of the gas. I cant be sure but I dont think your supposed to touch the casing.
I dont think its 'illegal' in the sense that your neighbor will be prosecuted. It would be different if you paid him to mess with the boiler.
I would wait for a response from a gas safe engineer as they can guarantee the correct answer.
As Cardew said, Corgi have been taken over by gas safe.0 -
No it's not illegal unless you neighbour charged you to do it. Although if it had been left dangerous and someone died or was treated for carbon monoxide poisoning the HSE may decide to attempt a prosecution. It depends if the case is a functional component....give us some details.0
