So what's with the phone numbers

With the online purchases if the sender is using a courier the courier usually wants the phone number

I have no problem in giving them my land line and it makes sense since If I am expecting a parcel the chances are that I will have to wait in until they deliver it. Insisting on a mobile number seems odd to me in those circumstances. It seems even odder if the customer does not have a mobile and the page is red asterisk.

My online banking asked me for my mob number so i entered it, the next day when I set up a new payee and paid them some money my bank text me to say that the payee had been set up and if I hadnt set it up to contact them. So I can see why the bank wants the number

I can think of many reasons why the bank might want my mobile number but I don't have one to give them so even if I am a convert I can't help them.

I am re-visiting this thread because of Google who also want my mobile phone number for security reasons. After starting a thread on there another post appeared saying how wonderful it was, included three links and a video explaining about their two step system for security where they send codes to your phone once a month. They could not be more helpful.

They suggest that if you don't have a mobile phone that you borrow one from a friend. My friends seem reluctant for me to give their phone number to Google .....I can't think why they are so unco-operative.

If Google are going to go through a security check every month then the friend will have to be available for that also and to this I have definitely (correctly spelled) been given advice on sex and travel by these friends.

If I owned a mobile phone and was paranoid I could see this not only as a way of giving my phone number but also a way of keeping it updated but neither apply to me so I'm ok.

Another reason "they" want your mobile number is so they can send spam texts to you.

As part of my last holiday booking I gave my mobile number to Thomson holidays so that "they could contact me in an emergency". Fairy nuff thought I, but after a week of daily spam texts I had to contact them to make it stop.

To be fair they did cease and desist.

I have long suspected that I am being pressured to give my phone number to people for marketing reasons. Your experience suggests I might be right.

"To contact you in an emergency" or "For security reasons" is beginning to seem a lot like lobbocks to me and more of a marketing ploy.

  • Again with Santander, they have to have my correct mobile number as they have to send me a text to my mobile with a different security code every time I want to make a payment or transfer money out of one of my accounts. I then have to enter the code they have given me via text into my computer to make the payment.

I agree its for security purposes, but what a bloody performance.

This is probably a vent but it is also a slight concern.

I have noticed that lately when I buy anything on line they say that they can’t deliver the goods unless I give them my phone number. I don’t know why that should be but I usually give it to them. Technically it is XD for historical reasons but I am not too fussed now.

Then my on line bank asked for my mobile number. My bank has taken to making you press a lot of buttons as you sign in like:-
Do you want to download this virus software
    What is your ID
Are your details up to date
What is your mobile number (red asterisk and required)
What is your inside leg measurement (only joking)
Do you want a picture of my sister ........and on and on.

I looked at the “Update Your Details” and could not get out of it since I did not have a mobile phone number to enter. It is a red asterisk requirement it seems. I had cancelled my phone service and thought it would be unhelpful to give them that number. I crashed the browser in the end and started over without offering to update any details.

During the daily video chat with my brother he told me that his bank will not allow him to sign in without giving a mobile phone number. He does not own a mobile phone so there is a problem there. His bank has a high street presence so he went to talk to them. Trying to be helpful they re-registered him and then told him that as a result he would not be able to access his account for a week or so. They also told him that one way round it was to enter the number of his land line instead.

Registering on a site the other day it said it wanted my mobile number and not having one now I entered my land line number. “Number Not The Correct Format”, it said.

So, what is going on and how are you going to use some sites if you don’t own a mobile phone in future.

I give them the number of my old (now unused) PAYG mobile phone.

It's the right format, a number that existed, but no one will ever read it or answer it, as it lies in a drawer, switched off.

I don't mind them having the landline, but companies usually take full advantage of having a mobile number, and send endless texts etc., trying to sell something.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

That's not funny since I think it could be true.

This whole thing has got me thinking of disaster scenario's.

I understand that a bank and Google are pressing this on the grounds of security etc. They send you a text code every time you move money and you have to enter this into your computer.

Could it be possible that there is someone out there who does not even own a computer? I remember that before I banked on line I would wait for a paper statement every month and do my mid month accounting myself. Later I was able to phone a number, enter my pin and get a balance statement.

So my question is ....is there someone out there who not only does not have a mobile phone but does not have a computer either.

Obviously they won't be able to reply to this post themselves but someone may know someone etc.

I wonder how they will get on.

This number will be taken off you and recycled by the network at some point.
