Instead of having to use a get round I would prefer that I could just politely refuse to give out information when I wanted to or indeed didn't have because I don't have a mobile phone or whatever.

    I agree entirely.

What makes it even more annoying is that they want email, home and mobile phone numbers and then don't use them.

When one of my cards was used by someone else for internet purchases (and kudos to them for picking that up), did I get a phone call? No. Did I get an email? No. They just started declining my card until I phoned them to ask what was going on.

My bank makes it seem as though you can't progress without downloading their software or giving them your phone number by greying out the boxes to continue without, but you can just carry on if you want to. I asked them to remove my number from their records when they kept ringing me trying to sell me stuff, but insisting that I go through their security procedures, so I've told them why they are not having my number any more, and stuck by it despite their best efforts!

    Santander ?

Whenever someone asks me for a number I am disinclined to give them I just enter the correct number of digits 01234 567890. Or 07123 456789 for a mobile. I've yet to find that a site does a sanity check on the number and rejects it (although some of the muppets that write the code for these sites cannot throw away the space and want it entered without one. rolleyes.gif )

I bet the owner of that number loves receiving your banking passwords. :rotfl:

You think I didn't check to make sure those numbers were unassigned? rolleyes.gif

    That'll do nicely.

Yes I am with Santander having arrived via the Alliance and Leicester route and the brother I mentioned is with Santander also but via the Abbey National route.

This could explain why the bother is different for each of us.
It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.

I have just bought pet insurance through that well-known company who are giving away the meerkat toys.

When I applied for one, it wouldn't process my application until I had provided a phone number, even though the box wasn't asterisked as compulsory.

Luckily for me, I have a old work number for an ex-colleague, which always goes to a long-abandoned voice mailbox! ;)

I don't use a mobile phone either - I hate the bloody things. I just put in '0000000000' if it is a required field.

I quite often use the telephone number of the head office of the company concerned. They are welcome to call themselves!

Sometimes they even get their own address if there is no reason for them to have mine.....

My online banking asked me for my mob number so i entered it, the next day when I set up a new payee and paid them some money my bank text me to say that the payee had been set up and if I hadnt set it up to contact them. So I can see why the bank wants the number

With the online purchases if the sender is using a courier the courier usually wants the phone number

I cannot stand sales calls on my mobile. I rely on it for work bookings and being in contact with my agency, so I can't generally ignore it and call-screen during my non-working hours but I try desperately hard to keep it for priority contact for me only.

I refuse to give it wherever possible, or I ask for a clear note on my account to be made that I am NOT to be sales-called on it and it's only for urgent contact only and that if they don't abide by this I will be taking my custom elsewhere. So far - only Virgin Media have failed to comprehend this - but collectively I've met more intelligent lettuces than that entire company so I kind of expect idiocy from them.

My bank do all the confirmations of direct debits and payments and stuff via email - which bounces straight to my phone anyway and is much more convenient for me.
