mobile phone data roaming
Options
I've resently returned from a 10 day holiday in Turkey with my Familiy, on my return my 14year old Son informed he could not use his phone, I contacted TMobile who informed me he had run a bill up for £2,100, I checked the instruction manual for the phone prior to going on holiday and know where in the instruction booklet did it indicate to prevent high cost while abroad turn off your data roaming, i've found that out on my return via this website
TMobile sent my Son 4 texts explaining how to use his phone whilst abroad but not one text informing about the data roaming switch.
I found out via the hotel the free wifi; which my Son used, I don't know what he used it for; I understand from TMobile it was used for google and facebook, I've asked for a breakdown of the usage.
I can't afford the £2,100 bill - does anyone know if I have any legal right to challenge this?
Thankyou
Kaye

Unfortunately, you don't have any legal right. Just search the board for 'turkey'.
It's a madness to give a contract handset to an irresponsible child. And the "instruction booklet" is the wrong place to look for charges, especially abroad.
Your best call is to appeal to the network's goodwill and to try negotiating a discount and some payment plan. Some 'victims' were able to get the bill cut by up to 50%.0 -
it is not t mobiles responsibility to inform you about the data roaming function. it is your responsibility.
ive just been on holiday and turned data roaming off instantly, to avoid being charged. i also kept an eye on my data counter. therefore i didnt get any data charges. i also set up a £50 credit limit on my phone bill, therefore when or if it gets to this amount it should in theory stop any usage.
i feel the best thing t mobile will do is offer a 25% discount??? thats what a work colleague got off them.
but on the other hand t mobile should????? have seen it was irregular usage by you or your son and barred the phone etc like a credit card etc, but they dont have to, in fact i dont think they have this facility.
its a common problem that needs sorting.0 -
Why is it my responsibility to know about data roaming?
If your not a geek or work for the telecommunications industry how would a person know?
My experience previously was you contacted your mobile phone company if you wanted to use your mobile abroad0 -
