Is it legal to buy a Gold mobile number?

I have seen lots of gold (easy to remember) numbers for sale on Ebay but is this legal?

I know you can obtain a PAC code and transfer to any network but I have heard that sometimes a network will confiscate a gold number if they find out money has swapped hands.

Firstly, I am pretty sure that there is no any comprehensive definition of a 'gold' number.
Secondly, I think if it's legal to buy/sell a PAYG sim card, then it's legal to buy/sell any number. A contract sim is a different matter though.

And finally, I think it's an urban myth as I don't see any reason for confiscating and I think the networks have loads of more important problems to deal with.
  • I doubt its illegal as Lebara are currently selling 'Gold' sims and numbers - The thing that should be illegal is the fact that they are charging £5,000 for numbers such as 000000, 111111, 222222 etc,!

I have this exact same problem. I transferred a very good number to Virgin mobile after buying from ebay and they have now suspended my account and wont release it until I can provide proof of ownership and they say that ebay is not an official source of purchase. Help!

If I were buying a number I would ask the seller to port it to a PAYG sim and to sell me the sim. Everything else smells like a scam.

its just like dvla selling number plates
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I got my number ( a good one) from ebay - just under £18 for the sim card and it were cheap I tell you.
Seen some whacky numbers on ebay now and they are priced at £90 - £500+ and worse than my £18 one.

Whats good to one person may not look good to another unless it spells something.
