We've got a mixer tap on the sink, and when our shower was broken I got the water to the right temperature by turning both taps on and stuck my head under that.Even if you've only got one in the kitchen use that. Sorted.

We bought a mixer tap with a shower attached, and my boyfriend and a friend tried installing it but now we have no shower, and barely any pressure through the taps.
Aa far as the taps are concerned thats probably because you've fitted high pressure taps on a low pressure system and they are too restrictive. 1/4 turn ceramic disk type I'll bet! As a result you don't have a pressure problem you have a flow rate problem with your taps.

The shower won't work either because in addition there is insufficient "head" between the bottom of the cold water tank and the shower head when you lift it up in the air. So no pressure as well as poor flow rate.

Did you ask the landlords permission to change the taps? You should have done.

If the landlord won't provide a shower then move to a place which has one or do as suggested above.

...........even after we said we wont tile the walls and a shower will damage them which will cost them a fortune when we leave!
Ludicrous and stupid threats and blackmail attempts won't endear you to the landlord for one solitary microsecond. Anyway he'll deduct damage rectification costs from your B/Fs deposit as and when you leave and if that doesn't cover it then he'll come after you for the balance anyway. Grow up.
