I think it'l be back to the shop for me tomorrow! I have waited 2 hours to download Superantispyware only to be told that, at 98%, it can't finish as it's not a trusted publisher (or something like that) and I'm sure Ad-Aware, Windows Defender will go the same way, as spybot wouldn't run either!

    do any exe's work?

you could try resetting IE to defaults

Reset internet explorer to defaults under IE, tools, internet options, advanced

, and copy http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/reg/antivirus-vista-2010/FixExe.reg to it, and double click (on faulty machine), if no exe's work

there's a fair bit of bloat running on that system, where did boostkit come from?

Mmmm that won't run either. It appears that all the downloads get to the end (which is taking hours in some cases) it's coming up with Security Warning, digital certificates cannot be verified, run or don't run - so I click run (as I'm thinking the links on here are safe) and the box closes down and that's that. The program doesn't appear to be anywhere (ie not in start menu or on my desktop) so I don't know what's happening!!!

download on another machine, and transfer with usb stick etc?

you could backup all data, and restore to factory defaults.

So we took the laptop to the shop today and everything was working fine down there! They suggested that it may be something to do with the wireless, but I said that the desktop and mobiles were all working fine, but anyway we've come home and switched the laptop on and low and behold it's playing funny !!!!!!s again!

Could it be the wireless making it work funny? I can't find our ethernet cable at the moment but will try to find that, disable the wireless and see what happens.

It's worth a shot to see if there's any improvement.

I restored IE to default and no difference.

I cannot open the fixexe on the laptop so I tried to open on desktop and copy onto USB but as my desktop is also broken (need to system restore that and am getting by with linux (?)) I cannot open as Windows is not recognised on my desktop -so I tried to copy/download the link to the USB but when I put it in my laptop it isn't opening anything????

Re: Boostkit - God knows what it is or why I've got it, hubby insists it's vital for the performance (and I think he's just saying what my stepson (14 year old who thinks he knows everything about PC's and is the one who has ruined my desktop)!!!! As for other bloat - don't know what anything is other than good old Word and Excel to be honest!!!

Today I have also tried connecting via the ethernet cable after disabling the wireless connection to see if maybe it was the wireless adaptor in the laptop making things run oddly - but no difference whatsoever.

I'm guessing the laptop should just be binned??!!!

It's a software problem, no reason to bin it. If you are unable to fix it, backup and use factory restore.

It's not clear what doesn't work - if you need fixexe, then no exe's will work, is that the case?

Does word, excel, notepad work? If not, what happens when you try to run
