procrastination- how do you get over it?

I think you just need to find yourself a clean (no distractions due to adverse tidying, etc) and boring (no TV, XBox, PS3, etc) room and just get down to it. Once you start writing, you'll find the ideas flow.
I used to do all my studying in the library (yawn!). I had to drive 20 miles from home to uni, and this gave me urge to do some work so it wasn't a wasted trip. I'm not saying go to this extreme, but it might help to just extract yourself from the distractions of your normal life so it's just you, a pen and a blank page. Please continue to hold the line. This is a very cool thread ... havent read through it all though, bet there is some real golden bits of advice in there!!
Im so bad always leave it til the last minute working through the night and being good for nothing the next day!
I think the having a clean distraction free zone to work in is so true, i live with my partner and the desk is a mess make-up n just stuff covers it barely enough room for the laptop and the whole room is very cluttered as its so small and i just cant work in here find i get more irritated than progress with my work. I drive 18 odd miles to uni and go to the LRC althought still get distracted by friends or just people watching :>
there is no cure who ever finds it is gona be rather rich!
ooh yeh guess what im meant to be doing now!! ive still got time though ....0 -

This may sound odd, but I also think a lot of people want to be organised but don't because they don't want to 'stand out'. I know sometimes when I'm having a really good week, everything's going to schedule and I feel great, but then I feel kinda left out coz all my friends are in the dog house running at the last minute and moaning about it. Not much I can do for them though but try to help where I can. I remember an assignment just last session, we had two months to do it. I had it done and odd for me submitted the night before the deadline (as opposed to five minutes after it the following day), but a friend was running behind on it so I stayed in at Uni for a few extra hours to help her out. I'm not sure what good I did other than helping her transfer the project from one folder to another, but she got a mental boost and was happy so I was happy to help.
G'luck with exams everyone, I have rather rotten luck this year, first exam on the 14th, last on the 24th and then just 3 days before the toil begins again. Gah, honour projects drag.Know me for who I am, not for who I say I am.0 -
Procrastinating now....hence the reason I am on here and not doing my two essays that need to be in in a couple of days are far from being STARTED!!:eek:0

I always find that when I've got to sit down and work hard to complete many hours of graft (revision, essays, etc.) I can only concentrate well for about 30-40 minutes at a time. Then, I have to cool off for an hour (or more, depending upon stress levels) doing something fun or go out somewhere to completely remove my mind from the job. Then, returning an hour or so later I can go 100% for another 30-40 min. This system means the hardest part is not the getting back to work, but ensuring you return to your desk in good time.
However, after more than 3 or 4 cycles, my concentration periods go down to between 20-30 min for the rest of the day...
Knowing this, I can plan out my work. So long as I get started in good time, you can work hard and get everything done without trying to get work done in a 4 hour session and then finding yourself procrastinating... It also helps keep stress levels in check!
However, when you're at work and you've got nothing constructive to do... that's another matter!New Year's Resolution: _party_

I just made the simple decision to put off all my procrastinating until tomorrow. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

all i did was make the first move. like getting up from bed and sit myself in front of the pc or something and do what i have to do. usually, it's the first moves the hardest. it's just like taking a payday loan, as you go, you won't even notice that it's almost the end or you've finished already.:: No unapproved or advertising links in signatures please - FT ::0
