Council Tax Rebanding...Should I

We move next week to a band E property. If you put the price we are paying for the house in the calculator it falls in Band D. It is a 5 year old estate and difficult to compare neighbours prices as most house styles are different, the ones same as ours are band E but that is based on their original purchase price. We are paying £50k less than the people who bought it.
Is it the current value of the house the valuation is calculated on? There are two other houses the same as mine up for sale and although more expensive at their asking price still fall within band D. This reduction in band could save £40 per month.
Look forward to any response.

I’m in Glasgow and how it works here is, your council tax band is based on how much your property was worth on a certain previous date (I think it’s something daft like 1993), or when it was built if the date is prior to that.
I expect your banding will be based on a similar system as there is no way that council tax bands could be based on what a property is worth at present, they would be changing all the time.0 -
Your council tax band is based on the property's value as at a certian date, not the current value. In England, it's 1 April 1991, in Wales it's 2003 - for more information see here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/YourlocalcouncilandCouncilTax/CouncilTax/DG_10037383
More information can be found on that page and the links, but in short, as your estate is only 5 years old, it's unlikely the banding is incorrect. You should also ensure that you're using the valuation office agency's calculator, rather than any other.0
