A buy one get it unlocked stick your sim card in the phone PAYG .
B buy one on contract .
Internet is not free but part of the package either paid for on a PAYG or part of contract allowance .
In both cases its neither free nor unlimited and never will be .

Also, if it's a PAYG handset and the OP is happy with the tariff, the old number can be ported to the new sim and there is no need in unlocking.B buy one on contract .In both cases its neither free nor unlimited and never will be .0 -
You can get an unlocked handset at Carphonewarehouse.
Smartphones gobble data so you MUST get a data package , even if you go PAYG. You will probably need 500mb per month.
Do you have wi-fi at home? If so you can cut down your internet/data use by always using wifi at home. For example, since I reset my data counter, I have used 20mb of my monthly allowance, but 75mb on wifi at home.
PAYG - first check which network works where you need it - for voice/text. If O2 or 3 work, then both 3 and Giff-Gaff (using O2) are the best for voice and data packages.
Contract - but a Samsung Galaxy Apollo from CPW and a sim-free contract that suits your needs - it's not difficult ot check that out on the main network web sites.
If you really want to splash out and commit for 24 months, you can do a lot worse than a Samsung Galaxy SII.0 -
