Exactly. You pose a risk with lenders as you dont have any history, so you will only get offered sky high interest rates. Gym membership doesnt mean diddly squat on your credit report.
You should have come on here and did as bit of research before applying for a card from M&S..we live and learn

You could try your bank but you already applied for M&S so you are running out of options. Capital One Classic, nice card, very sleek looking, great online service, I set up DD with no issues, go for them. Get rejected once more you may have to wait 6 months before applying again.0

You could try but another rejection wouldn't look good on your credit file.....although it wouldn't show as a rejection, just a search.
Your lack of any credit would mean your 'mainstream' card providers are limited if not non existant0 -
Don't worry about 0%.. if you pay it off in full every month you'll never incur interest even on a 35.9% card! You're looking to build up history at the moment, not run up debts!0

Definitely register for voting! It worked for me and generally it helps your credit rating a lot. When I did that I got a credit card after 1 moth.0

Get yourself onto the electoral role for sure. I would do that before even applying for a Cap1. The lender does not want to have to send doorstep collectors to your gym if things goes wrong.:rotfl:0

Yep, you're aiming WAYYYYYYYY too high and you need to start down the bottom, where everyone starts basically.
Interest can be 1 gazillion % but as you're credit building and are going to settle in full every month, it matters not one squat.
0% cards are so far out of your reach at the moment they may as well be on Saturn."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -
Direct debits increase your INTERNAL SCORE with the bank.
Visa Electron cards are for people with BAD credit history.
Make sure you are on the Electoral Roll.
Ask your bank to upgrade your account, give you an overdraft facility and ask about pre approval on a standard credit card.
Get a capital one classic visa.
Build your history
Pay your credit card bill IN FULL (not min payment)
12 months later apply for a creation mastercard or something semi prime.- HSBC Premier - Mastercard £9,000 - Overdraft £6,000 - MBNA Platinum £3k (£2,500 @ 0% SPENT) - American Express Platinum £6,100 - Coutts Classic Card £5,000 - House Of Fraser Recognition Mastercard / Santander Cards £250 -
- Bank Americard Limit $3100 - Citi Mastercard Limit $700 - WalMart Discover Card $2,500 Limit -0 -
I'm guessing that as you have an electron card, you have an Easycash account? This is a basic account that does not build internal score with your bank, and doesn't report to the CRAs. Get a proper current account, Halifax does the Reward account that pays you £5 every month if you pay in £1000, have your salary paid into the account and direct debits paid out, which will build your internal bank score, and will lead to things like overdrafts and credit cards with your bankDebt free and staying that way! :beer:0

dont worry about the rejection, i got rejected by M&S too and also never had any credit history, i just rang them up and they changed their mind and gave me one - but with a low credit limit of £500.
But since having the card for only one month I applied for another credit card with halifax and got a £500 limit, then a month after this applied for a 3rd credit card with natwest and got a £2600 limit!
I got rejected by halifax too initially and rang them up and they overturned the decision. give it a go!0
