Help getting a credit card, were am i going wrong?

Hi,

I tried applying for a M&S credit card yesterday and got declined :(

Im 21, and have been working 3 years full time.

I have a gym membership that comes out of my halifax visa electron once a month. Thats the only direct debit coming out.

I live with my parents. And i have no other outstanding debt.

Why cant i get one?

I logged onto money supermarket and put in all details. All the 8 credit cards that came up were under LOW meaning it would be a very slim chance of me getting one.

I have a direct debit card, and a visa electron.

I have never used my debit card as i prefer the visa electron. All my wages are paid into my visa elctron and my gym membership comes out every month..

What can i do? Were am i going wrong??

Thanks.

    Your income is ?

  • You have no credit history, and your gym membership is not going to be on your file. Aim lower than M&S and get a capital one classic.

I have to agree....you're aiming way too high. M&S is not for you at the minute I'm afraid. You need to build a credit rating. Go for the capital one classic as advised, perhaps a catalogue account if that fails, but you have to start somewhere.

    I meant debit card
  • On the others its 0% interest on payments. The capital one is 34% !!

Yes but you won't get a 0% card with your lack of history. You have to start off with one of these cards BUT you don't have to incur the interest charges. You clear your balance every month to show you can manage your finances then in a few months (at least 6) you could perhaps try stepping up.

ok, you said you had an Electron AND a debit card, but an electron is a debit card....

Anyways, as the others say, you need to start with the capital one classic, hold that for a year, then aim a bit higher :)

Just don't ever run a balance on it at minimum 35.9% APR :)
  • Should i try for a halifax card as i have banked with them for 21 years?
