My son applied for this account a few weeks ago. They asked for orginial documents so he rang them and they took his UCAS reference and everything so said they only needed proof of address. He sent of his bank statement and now they have written back saying that is not enough.

I am going to ring them today.

Good luck with that - I gave up after 20 mins on hold :(

Thought I would post an update, my overdraft was activated today, so 3 days after I deposited the money. No further evidence needed.

You can use the sort code and account number off the chequebook to get onto your online banking and have a look at what it says.

You'll need to phone the co-op to set up internet banking - do this, and if there is any problems I'm sure they will mention them. I suspect that they won't, and that your confirmation letter will arrive in a few weeks...they seem to send them quite sporadically.

Amiehall - 3 days is quite good...any sign of your cards? Did you leave the money there when you deposited it? I transferred it last night, but I start tomorrow, so I could do with it being activated!

A bit of feedback regarding the co-op account, some people said theyve had to wait a while before hearing anything:
I applied at 06:34 this morning
    Accepted at 09:39 this morning

I did it all via the net, and have bad credit I think, so im rather supprised I was accepted.
Still, cant complain- very happy actually.

After I got the email confirmation on the 12th sept I got a a letter confirming I was accepted. the letter stated I needed to sign the enclosed documents and send them back.. within 7 days. only there were no enclosed documents (except for a sheet telling about what ID I need to provide - "1 document from list A" but there is no list A on the document!)

So I called to ask about the missing dcuments, and they told me I had been declined for the account!, they checked and said I was never accepted, shouldnt have recieved the email or the 1st letter.....

Apparently there is a letter on the way explaining why i was declined, who knows maybe I will get those missing docments .....

not to bothered about the waste of time, or not getting the account, but I dont think I would every trust this bank serious amountof money, what a mess.

Son phoned Coop - they asked some security questions, set up a pin number thingy - & hey presto - online banking.

All with only a cheque book - no email, letters, requests or anything.

My card has arrived today. I deposited the £300, left it until my online banking changed from £0 overdraft to £1400 then transferred it to my smile account.

You'll struggle to move it out using online banking to a different account though. It didn't let me set up a new payee without my debit card/card reader but I was able to transfer it to smile.

I also applied for a Co-Operative Student Account online (after being turned down in branch at RBS due to 'poor credit' - which is interesting as there's nothing untoward on my Experian report, in fact I've never been in credit!). I applied on 6th September and received nothing until 15th September when I got a chequebook through the door (I seem to be in the same situation as your son, kateo). Based on advice given in this thread, I then phoned up and registered for internet banking with no issue, and deposited £300 into the account the next day.

My overdraft has not yet been activated (although it's only been a few business days since the deposit), and I have not received a card. Then again, I've not received *anything* other than a cheque book and a letter yesterday confirming I'd registered for internet banking. So they have no ID, no evidence of student loan etc...

I'm slightly concerned that they're seemingly taking a while to get everything sorted, especially since I'm moving from Edinburgh to London to start my course in 10 days :/

My overdraft took three days to activate...that seems to be very standard, I think it must be automatic. Everyone's seems to activate exactly three days after deposit, I've not met anyones whose hasn't.

As for the card...I haven't got mine yet. I've phoned up and they said there is a back log but it'll get here eventually.

I've had to move out without it, which is a bit of a nightmare!
