There is a lot of misunderstanding and questionable information on the above threads.

A good local engineer who works at a reasonable price is likely to be available but to find him you will probably have to get recommendations rom neighbours.

Modern boilers are pretty reliable but I they do break down they do need someone who is competent with repairs and has the experience and ability to diagnose faults. The Gas Safe register is only concerned about safety to work with gas!

The main factor in a reliable heating system is correct installation on a cleaned system. Skimping on installation is not good economic sense!

I am just looking for someone to service my boiler, but for those who have never bothered, please remember, you 'smell or see carbon monoxide, but it will kill you. I hope you have at least invested in some CO alarms?

I have almost been carbon monoxide poisoned twice, in two different homes. Once, it was a very old boiler, the other time it was a boiler less than a decade old which hadnt been serviced for perhaps two of three years. I only knew because I had an alarm fitted. On the first occasion, apparently the CO levels emitting from the boiler were very, very high.
