Gas boiler service contracts

Jennifernil, all I can say is you must be a regular chapel attendant.0

Yes, we have been lucky so far! Keeping everything crossed now!0

Thanks everyone, particularly jdta09 - my nan was worried about ending her gas cover with BG (which I think isn't the best deal for her) and after I found this page and a few others for her on the internet she's coming round to the idea. She still only trusts "the gas board", bless her!0

Both boilers are Potterton, now almost 19 years old, and OH has kept an eye on them and fixed one little problem (electrical).
Our heating costs are low compared to many others I have seen so we are happy. Our house is very well insulated. The money we have saved over the last 18 years on servicing will go a long way towards the cost of new boilers when we need them.
Quote christine - Potterton boiler the best! I have had mine for 22 years and only had it services once (I know thats not what you do!) Just recently took out BG had so much flak from them I cancelled now looking for someone else to take over - Migh try Homeserve - Anyone tried them0 -

The trouble is that 22 years ago a Potterton boiler might have been 'the best'(for all I know)
However there is so much 'badge engineering' these days with firms taking over other firms and all using common parts, that we have absolutely no idea who is best now.
Most guarantees are for 2 or 3 years - the best I have seen is 5 years, and that is only valid if you have a full service - which is little more than cleaning.
I understand(has been reported on MSE) that the very expensive BG servicing plan excludes the exchanger from their free replacement guarantee.
It is rather like Mercedes. 20+ years ago they were 'bullet proof'. made in Germany and a byword for reliability.
They then 'outsourced' production to South Africa etc and the financiers in the company decided they were 'over-engineered'! They quickly became a byword for unreliabilty.0 -
Try swintons..if your boiler is less than 15 years i am sure they give a good price.0

re. find a local gas engineer.......
that is what we tried to do for about a year! we had at least 3 never return calls or make appts and then not show up.
that is why we had to go with bgas so we could get a safety check/service.
we stayed with bgas a year (had a 15% discount) for boiler/heating cover and gas fire cover with no claims. this year we moved to eon for boiler/heating cover (they didn't go gas fire separately) and stayed with bgas for fire cover.
we had to call out eon for a fault before they had done (very delayed) check. they did respond in a timely manner and were easy to talk to and get hold of etc, although our problem took a few weeks in total to fully repair (parts, xmas etc).
depending on whether you work for nhs etc, are in a union there are probably deals/discounts to be had. we went through quidco for our eon change - paid out £25:D.0 -
hi, i am at this moment scanning the comparison sites to see if we should change frm Brit Gas but as this thread has been started thought i may as well ask about this as well - we did think that our gas was too high maybe due to a fault but after reading posts on here, think its probably normal (just too much £'s like everyone else's!) but is about time we had a boiler service - it's at least 10 years old, hasnt been serviced for at least 5, did wonder if it was worth taking out the brit gas homecare thing for a year to get the included service then getting a 2nd opinion on any work they reckon we need doing - bound to recommend a new one! BUT is it just as well to get an independant person to do the service then and forget BG?
sorry this is so waffly!!0 -

With most older boilers the service consists of cleaning and visual checks, and is more a safety check.
My 2 non-condensing boilers have absolutely no adjustments to affect their efficiency, except you can alter the size of the pilot flame.
So getting the boiler serviced is unlikely to reduce your gas consumption.0 -
Good morning: For advice see the Gas Safe Register , the HSE or consult your boiler's manufacturer.
