I am furious my EDF i was told by the person i spoke to when i changed to them that £80 would cover my gas and electricity, going by my previous years reading,
I queried this as it didnt seem enough to me,the lady said yes but you are going to save with us because we are cheaper,
I then got a letter to say my D would go up to £124 a month as i was paying too little, i wasnt happy with this as i am a pensioner, but i agreed to pay£100 a month, which i would have been better off paying in the first place
Then on my final GAS bill i was £163 in credit, brilliant, but then was told it had to go towards paying my electricity bill, plus the £120 government grant, which ended up as £114 as they took £6 off for vat
On my final ELECTRICITY bill i still had £283 to pay,
I just cant see why my Electricity bill was so high, at the end of the summer i was over £500 in credit
I have complained 3 times and been fobbed off with well you have used it,
All i have that is Electric are TV lights and usual household appliances, i have a tumble dryer but only used it twice since summer,as i bought a clothes airer to save the Electric, and put clothes on the radiators to dry
Would anyone say this was a case of miss selling, as i am going to ring the no given on here for complaints

Hi newbie here...Can anyone advise as to if I can make a complaint or
    receive any refund ...
My problem stems from a meter that was exchanged a few years ago whilst with British Gas.It was changed to a digital dual tariff but what I did not realise until yesterday that the day rate has been higher to offset the economy 7 .. We have always had gas central heating since buying the house new 28 years ago so have been paying extra in the daytime for basically running small appliances at night.
I must add that we had no choice regarding the meter just a letter to say when it was going to be fitted..

I only found this out yesterday whilst complaining to my current supplier NPower about another matter and the agent mentioned that I did not need economy 7 tariff as I had no storage heaters ...
One good thing is she promised to rejig both readings from the start (Aug 11) and only charge the lower day rate.

Has anyone had the same scenario ???
  • A great many complaints stem from suppliers changing the 'goalposts' after you have signed up. This all has the smell of MISS SELLING SCANDAL written all over the suppliers. About time 'battle lines' were drawn up I think
  • I am with British Gas through Sainsburys Energy and signed up just under a year ago with them on the promise that my dual fuel would be significantly reduced!

My revised direct debit with them was £17 cheaper a month then my previous supplier but they the increased it after a few months by £25 taking it to a higher amount then my previous supplier.

I had a half an hour conversation with the complaint team who managed to resolve this by changing the tariff I was on from a fixed rate to a tracker type rate which is 6% lower than the standard giving me an instant saving and waivering the cancellation fees and also compensating me £100 if I remain with them for a further year! Am very happy with this result.

    Thank you Martin :)

Yes, we have just had the same scenario.

We have been with British Gas for ages. In discussions with BG it seems that we have been paying a really high day rate and have a lower night rate (that we hardly use).

According to BG we use 11% overnight and it is only worth having Economy 7 if 55% of your electricity usage is overnight. (Nice of them to tell me years ago when they were asked to put me on the cheapest tariff ).

Anyway a helpful CS lady has agreed to backdate our account to the one rate for day use and we are now in £1100 credit. I can not tell you how pleased I am!!!:j

If you are on Economy 7 please, please, please check it's right for your usage. We were unnecessarily paying about £130 more each year for our Electric:eek:.

  • I received a bill this morning for Gas and Electric dated between November 2010 – June 2011 from an address that I previously lived it at. I have not lived at the house for over a year and a half and confused as to why I have been sent this letter now after having confirmed with my provider that all final bills had been paid upon moving away from the address.

I spoke to a customer services agent to query this and was advised that the meter at the house was wrong from a recent reading which is why the bills have been sent out now, however a meter reading was completed upon moving out (by an agent visiting the house).

I would know why it has taken over a year and a half to rectify this and is the provider allowed to charge for this? There have been two more sets of tenants living at the address since I left, and therefore how does the provider know it was my electric and gas usage?

This was also a university property. Other tenants were living there at the same time as me, and I am no longer in contact with them to pass the bill on.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I would suggest this should be covered by the billing code that the energy suppliers have signed up to. you can check the information on this website http://www.energy-uk.org.uk/customers/energy-industry-codes/code-of-practice-for-accurate-bills.html
  • I am currently with Eon and have began the process to switch to Scottish power (SP) fixed till April 2014 - What concerns me is that the literature I received from SP what I pay with Eon on my current contract vs SP rates. Their Info fo0r Eon is incorrect and misleading. They quoteEon's rates as follows:
    Electricity
primary Unit Rate as 24.276 per Kwh (my last bill up to 4/11/12 shows a rate of 23.12)
Secondary Unit Rate as 11.928 (my last bill up to 4/11/12 shows a rate of 11.36)
    Gas:
primary Unit Rate as 8.573 per Kwh (my last bill up to 4/11/12 shows a rate of 8.165)
Secondary Unit Rate as 3.73(my last bill up to 4/11/12 shows a rate of 3.55)
In addition - they Quote Eon's discount rate as 8% for each fuel (it is actuall 10% per fuel)
So their margins look much better than they actually are
I have a spraedsheet I keep which calculates all the necessary figures to produce a bill (I was only 1p out on Eon's last bill)

Plugging the Tariff rates In for my area for SP (with their lesser discount - the bill is approx the same - not cheaper
Granted the Fixed Price contract till April 2014 should work in my favour - but I stll feel as I am being mislead here - thoughts anyone ??

  • On checking my bill online i noticed that EDF have increased my direct debit to £76 a month which is £37 gas,£27 elec, and £6 under gas payment,£2 under elec payment and £4 for "gas debt",as i have always paid by DD and i'm in credit by over £200 i dont understand this,i rang them and they didn't really explain it just saying i'm in credit with elec but not with gas and the extra payments are correct?
    anybody any answers please?
  • i signed up with npower when i got pulled outside a supermarket by them. they promised me a fixed rate and £100 discount for duel fuel paid by dd. then i got a letter saying they couldnt give me a pre pay meter where i lived. i phoned them and said i didnt want a meter thats not what i had signed up for. they looked into it and said someone had made a mistake thier end pushed the wrong button or something and they'd sort it out within a couple of months. it took them 6 months and i had to phone them twice to tell them i still wasnt paying for my gas while they were 'sorting' it out. so i ended up 6 months in debt with the gas which i dont mind paying back because i expected it but now theyre saying i dont qualify for the discounted because i havent been paying for both on direct debit for a year...ive got to wait a further 6 months even though that was thier mistake and thier initial deal wouldnt have been as appealing without this incentive!! should i fight for it?
