Energy Misselling successes

  • I've been with EDF for a bit over 2 years now, I've been receiving huge bills from them quarterly until recently when I asked them to look into this.
I started taking meter readings as I previously didn't have access to the meter as it was behind a locked door in our apartment block and miraculously, my usage appears to have dropped by about 60%... I've averaged out based on a daily usage rate and even at double (for a Winter estimate) the figures still come in way below what I have been paying.
On checking with neighbours and people of a similar sized property (2 Bed apartment) they were paying on average around £50-60/month whereas our bills have been coming in somewhere around £180-£220/ month on average.
I have asked EDF to look into this however they have brushed me off saying it's nothing to do with them ... how convenient that once I reported it the bills drop?

Has anyone had any similar experiences or could provide any advice?

    Thanks!

Is it possible that EDF have now also been able to gain access to the meters and the last bill you have is based on an actual reading?

Have your previous bills been based on estimated readings?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • They have always had access to the meters, I have only recently obtained access to the meters.
They said it's possible they estimated...
  • Hi, Desperately hoping someone can help us!!
October 2016 we changed from scottish power to b.gas for our electric supply. as we already pay by direct debit with b.gas we thought this would be the easy option for now. B.gas told us they would have to replace s.powers meter with a b.gas prepayment meter, then they would fit a meter for paying by direct debit, they eventually did this. we have been trying to get a new direct debit set up with them to pay electricity. at first on calling them they didnt know anything about it!
This farce has still not been resolved and we are still not paying for electricity. we are at our wits end. we are pensioners (haha) and thought we could save money by changing to direct debit.
dreading what/if any the outcome is going to be can only imagine what kind of massive bill they are going to threaten us with. not to mention probably being blacklisted, so even if we put ourselves through the terrible time of switching again we might not be accepted.
Worried sick. PLEASE, CAN SOMEONE TELL US TO CONTACT.
Will never take Martins advice again, its just far too stressful.
So, so gratful if someone can help.xx
if i had known then what i know now

Hi all, would really appreciate some advice! Have this morning received a letter from Npower out of the blue offering compensation of £95. We believe we were miss sold energy back in 2010 when they had cold called us promising a cheaper deal and ended landing us in debt after just a few months. They wrote to us in April 2014 about this. I kept after them for a year or so, sending the information they asked for, would hear nothing for months only to be told they hadn't received the information again and again. Eventually I got back on their case in June 2016, and received a letter saying that we were definitely not mislead or we would have heard from ofgem and that they were closing the complaint. So as you can tell I'm a little mystified to receive the letter today offering £95! In this letter they still state they have not received my full information!! And have been unable to progress with my claim. My question is.... Do I take their measly offer and run or dig my heels in and hope for more?! Thankfully I keep all my paperwork so still have most of the letters.
    Many thanks!
  • On the 27 June 2017, a Broker for Hudson Energy came to my door and offered me a cheaper deal than the £45 I was paying EDF but suggested that I could combine both Gas & Electricity which I was paying £90 - £100 per month for a 2 bedroom house on a DD for both...

For most of 2016, both EDF (electricity) & NPOWER (Gas) were in credit so monies was simply removed from that credit balance per month, so I didn't have to fork out monies out of my actual bank account...

The Broker for Hudson aka GreenStar Energy offered me a DD for £60 a month on a fixed price capped contract. Well, the 'ole clich! - "if it is too good to be true" prevails here after 6 months of DDs where I was never told by the Broker that the energy contract would be handled as an online account and lo & behold, the GAS account was initially rejected on the switch over from NPOWER...

So for 6 months I have been paying GreenStar Energy, to come to find out that the gas account was never switched after getting a bill from NPOWER for £331.31 and a threat to remove my gas meter...

GreenStar Energy said that they was holding £231 in credit from the gas account that wasn't switched and have since decided after estimated meter reading that I would only be entitled to £45 as a refund.

I have stopped my DD and wrote a strong letter to the boss of Hudson & the 2nd in command to have this redressed but the posturing continues right up to a 2 hour phone call this morning... The sales person on the phone is saying to me that if the broker came to my door that there would be no "PROOF" of what was said and it would be my word against his - which for all intents & purposes is a bit dodgy!!!

I watch Martin all the time on telly and he is such a financial prodigy and I would like some advice before I go to the Watchdog for amelioration...

Thanks & Happy New Year to martin & the Team at MoneySavingExpert...
  • Economy energy made a mistake on my bill. A closing balance of debit £6.18 and on the carded forward opening balance the debit was £44.16. The meter reads matched and no payments missing. I have made numerous calls and complaints and nothing is being done. E mails never replied to.
Staff in customer complaints were also unaware you could leave with no exit fee if in the last 49 days of contract.

Well done economy energy keep robbing your customers ....

Iresa is one of many companies including British Gas / Sainsbury's / Places for People Energy etc who give FRAUDULENT QUOTATIONS for Economy 7 electricity. Their bills can be significantly higher because they choose to make unfounded assumptions about the amount you use overnight: they ask only for the total usage, or ignore the usage figures you have given them. They arbitrarily assume that up to 70% is used overnight, but if you use a smaller proportion at night their fake "quotations" amount to Misrepresentation, which is a criminal offence.

Try it yourself: get an online "quotation" for 20% night usage, e.g. 2000kWh (day) and 500kWh (night), and then calculate from their published E7 rates just how much more expensive it would really be !

OFGEM CEO Dermot Nolan has personally known about this scam for 18 months but has chosen to allow the offenders to keep scamming all the way to the bank.

  • My current supplier has attempted to charge us over 8,000GBP for our electric bill. Twice they have tried to remove this amount from our account. The 3rd time they tried to remove 5,000GBP. To which we were advised by our current supplier to cancel our direct debit. Now they have accidentally depositied 5,000GBP in our account (they didn't realise this happened, we called them to tell them it has).

The issue seems to have arisen because we had a meter reading in Feb 2018 from a data collector which showed we had a 5 digit meter. Previous to this however our current supplier was provided with a meter reading from British Gas that was only 4 digits. Note we switched from BG to our current supplier in 2016. The error lies in the switch between to two. Our current supplier assumed we were 4 digits and rejected all further data collect entries of 5 digits.

As a result we of course want to give back the money which is not our, but wish no longer to be in debit - since we have continually paid our direct debit every month without fail. Even once all is cleared the energy supplier is still stating that we are 1,000K in debt. We live in a 2 bedroom home and both work full time.

We dealt with the discrepancy between the two agencies in 2017 - however this issue has come up again. We're at a loss on how to deal with it. It seems ludicrous that they can change 8K for and electricity bill. I have seen a note on the site about back billing, and asked if they could confirm the date to which they are attempting to back bill.

Has anyone faced such a huge bill before? I asked 2 people who were speaking with us from the Energy Supplier and they hadn't ever.

    Any advice welcome.

We still have the 5k, they are telling us we owe 1k, we never entered incorrect readings. They ignored all the correct ones, because it didnt fall in line with BG handover.
