easyJet luggage problem

On 28th July were traveled on EZY8747 from Gatwick to Zakynthos.

When we checked in the baggage conveyor belts had broken down and our luggage was put into large wire trolleys.

When we arrived at Zakynthos about half the flight's luggage was missing. Dozens of people had missing cases, some like us had nothing.

It's pretty clear easyJet knew they had a lot of luggage missing before they took off from Gatwick. People who later spoke to Gatwick were told the plane had to take off or it would have missed its slot and that would mean passengers would be stuck in Zakynthos as they'd be no plane to take them home.

I believe we should have been told our luggage was missing before we took off, we would have got off the plane and waited for it to be found, no one wants to go on holiday without any clothes or other essentials.

I think easyJet behaved pretty disgracefully in not informing us a Gatwick or even when we had landed at Zakynthos.

Could it be that easyjet would rather pay compensation for lost baggage than you losing your holiday as it would cost more?

The suitcase turned up eventually, we found it at the airport on the way back.

Normally delayed or lost luggage is covered by the Montreal Convention but my complaint is not really about the luggage getting lost, easyJet must have known half the luggage was missing from the aircraft's hold, with security nowadays these things are counted, yet knowing they had lost half the plane's luggage they chose not to tell us, we were effectively dumped in Greece to holiday without clothes etc.

Similar thing happened to my son last year. They went to Madrid but their luggage didn't! They were reunited with their case at the end of the holiday back in Gatwick.

Easyjet just said they had to claim from their travel insurance for the extra expenditure incurred. After a struggle he managed to get back the extra money he had paid for hold baggage. Easyjet seemed to think they could charge for hold baggage and then not transport it.

Let us consider the practicalities of this for a moment.

When did Easyjet realise that it couldn't get the bags onto the plane. Before or after the passengers had boarded. I would imagine after, as whilst the plane was at the gate, they would be (hopefully) trying their hardest to get the bags onto the plane.

So all the passengers are boarded, and some do not have their bags on the plane. What do they now do, start to read a list of the names of passengers where there bag is not on the plane and ask them if they want to fly? Apart from the fact that this is guaranteed to end up in an argument and the police being called to drag unhappy passengers away, it would take an unbelievably long time even if everyone co-operated.

And suppose you did get off, do you expect Easyjet to put you on the next flight? What if it and all the flights for the next week are full?

The best you could do would be -
    1. Know Easyjet's compensation policy "if your baggage is delayed for more than 24 hours on an outbound journey, you can spend up to £25 per day per person on essential items, for a maximum of three days. To claim this allowance you must write to our claims handling agents within 21 days of the relevant flight at the address provided to you by the easyJet handling agent at the airport where the delay was reported. All claims must be supported by documentary evidence of purchases made (e.g. receipts)"

    2. Have decent travel insurance.

    3. Since it was Easyjet and you can take a cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25cm with as much weight as you like, some items to keep you going for a few days, just in case.

So knowing half the luggage is missing from the plane's hold easyJet simply dump us in Greece and hightail it back to the UK without saying a word.

I'm pretty sure they aren't allowed to do that.

They are allowed as long as you are informed when you reach your destination. As a previous poster said it would be impractical to tell you before take-off then allow people to leave the flight.

Almost as impractical as going on holiday without any luggage!
