Twickenham Stadium to Richmond Station

In November I'm going to Twickenham to watch the Australia versus Barbarians game.
I'm travelling from the North of England by treain and the best route seems to be going to Euston and then travelling via London Overground to Richmond, via Willesden Junction, with the trip taking aprox 45 minutes and then 20 minute walk to Twickenham.
Getting there is no problem, but my query is regarding the return journey.

I imagine that the stadium will be about half full -- roughly from the final whistle, how long will it take me to get back to Richmond station, before I start heading back to Euston ?

I'm hoping that everything will slot intomplace and I can plan on buying Advance tickets for the train (saving a small fortune over Off Peak tickets), but as I'll be walking/travelling with a couple of 7 year olds, if I can get home earlier that 23.30 it would be an advantage :D (especially when we are playing rugby ourselves the next day ;))

Its an absolute nightmare getting out of the ground afterwards. Luckily most head towards Twickenham station and not Richmond. Give yourself an hour to get back to Richmond.

I would get a train to and from Twickenham not Richmond and leave 5 minutes before the match ends.

Might be worth a look to see if you can go via Reading - probably at least one extra change and you might have to do a bit of detective work to find prices and times etc, but if you are heading out of Euston you are presumably heading North West, so changing somewhere around the Midlands (Wolverhampton seems likely) onto a Virgin service for Paddington or the South Coast would get you into Reading from where you can get a local train to Twickenham station. The reasoning being that at Twickenham the trains into London are generally rammed, but most of the trains continue through to/from Reading which is much easier to get on and generally uses different platforms. The Police tend to use crowd control and only let a certain number of people on a train - on that basis I would book advance tickets to Reading and then get open tickets for that section as you can't guarantee being on a specific train out of Twickenham.

soory, I'm all confused. If everyone heads for Twickenham station, wouldn't I be better off heading for Richmond ?
My plan was to use London Overground, rather than heading into London iteslf and using the Underground.

Thats a belting idea, but I don't think that the logistics would work. The last train taht I could get from Reading to get me back to Cumbria would leave at 18.40, and with it being an hours journey from Twickenham to Reading, the only realistic train option for me would be the 17.10 from TWI, which seems to be REALLY tight.

With the helpful advice that you've both given me, I'm now leaning towards a 19.20/19.30/19.40 departure from Euston (with a late return home). If the game finishes about 16.30, will we realistically be able to get back to Euston 2 and a half hours, with a bit of time to spare ?

p.s. I reckon that the ground will be about half full, not rammed full of 80 odd thousand

Twickenham Station gets extremely busy on match days. There is a bus from Richmond - Twickenham Stadium - Richmond on match days that costs 50p to the stadium and free on the return trip. The bus stops at Pools on the Park, you can then cut through Old Deer Car Park, turn left past the Court cross over the road, walk down the right side of the pub and come out opposite the station (less than 10 minutes).

From experience, after the match the eastbound road journey towards Richmond is quicker than the westbound journey towards the M3 because you don't have to go all the way round the roundabout and past the car parks that are situated on that road.

I drive this route 5 days a week to work and have been to numerous matches at Twickenham!

As a further left field suggestion - what about going north to one of the Hounslow stations (either rail or Tube) and catching a train into London from there? Not sure how the walking distances compare but Hounslow rail is certainly closer than Richmond Tube. The Hounslow Tube trains are on the Picadilly line in from Heathrow and would take you to Kings Cross which is spitting distance from Euston.

The Hounslow tube stations are not within walking distance you would have to catch a bus. Twickenham isn't a tube station it's only overground.

You could try catching the train from Twickenham to Feltham and then change to go to Reading

    That sounds like a plan.

In your opinion, we'd be comfortably able to get to Euston for our 19.30 train if we take the bus to Richmond station, then overground to Willesden, overground to Euston and then onto our Pendolino.
  • Why in God's name would you go London Overground from Euston to Willesdon Junction then London Overground again (a different branch!) from Willesdon Junction to Richmond???

If you are sold on the idea of using Richmond then either:
    - go Victoria line from Euston to Vauxhall then take a mainline train (SWT) from Vauxhall to Richmond; or
    - go Victoria line from Euston to Highbury and Islington then get the London Overground from H&I to Richmond.

The former would be my preferred option. Oh, and get Oyster cards to reduce your fares!! Cash fare (any of the options, including yours) £5, Oyster fare £2.50.....

When I've put in my route to the ticket search engines, that is the route that has always come up !!!!! The fare for the four of us comes out at £11.60.
I can see that the Oyster would be £2.50, but surely thats £2.50 per person, each way ? (the children would be free), so the saving isn't massive.
Looking at the the TFL site, it looks like the journey would be 10-15 minutes shorter than my original plan (or about the same, depending on trains taken !), but am I right in thinking that coming back into London, it's going to be a longer job getting onto a London bound serviice ?

Finally, (& please bear in mind that I'm a rural sheep chaser), are 'zone' tickets vaild on mainline services ?

Don't see, unless you have a railcard where that fare is coming from. National Rail Enquiries gives the following (couldn't get a Sat in Nov to show):

    http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/timesandfares/EUS/RMD/today/1830/dep

The answer to your question is YES!
