Check out the local HGV driving schools in your area, most, if not all will offer C1 (up to 7.5 tonnes) lessons.
Category D1 is a minibus with up to 16 passengers... you sure you need that?Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
i will be ringing up tomorrow thanxs .. might have mistaken as i might not need the D1 (i will also check that tomorrow just incase) thanxs for the speedy reply0

The C1 & D1 entitlement might be the same test but I'm not sure. Best to askAlways try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Another money-making scheme from your caring-sharing Govt. Up to 1991, you could drive a 7.5 Tonne truck on a car license, however, pass your test after April '91 and kerrrhing, that'll be another test if you want to drive a 7.5 Tonner.
If you are unemployed you might be able to get on a course for free. If not, You could always go down the route of applying to your local bus operators, they often take people on and train them up before putting them through a PSV test. If I remember correctly, this also allows you to drive a class C HGV (non-artic. up to 39 Tonnes). You will have to stay working for the bus co. for a couple of years though, but as they pay good money, this isn't a problem.Never Knowingly Understood.

Yes it is another way to make money but TBH i'm glad they did it, although I would have liked to have automatic entitlement for 7,5 tonne. Seeing some of the idiots on the road these days it would be pretty stupid allowing them to drive something as large as that legally. Too many people can't even reverse a focus let them loose in 7,5 tonne lorry and your asking for trouble.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

Whats wrong with having to take a test for a different catagory? if you pass your test in a car you shouldnt automatically be entitled to drive a truck, that would be as mad as passing your bike test and getting bus entitlement. 7.5 tonne trucks are a different beast to a car and need a whole different set of skills to handle safetly.
Its not about making money, its about keeping road users safe.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
Don't waste your time doing Cat C1. Go and do Cat C. It costs the same, you'll drive a similar vehicle but you can drive any rigid HGV up to 31 tonnes.0

That is incorrect, like the rest of your post.
The reason the C1 test was brought in was due to the EU. And it makes sense to test someone to drive a vehicle 1/3 wider, up to twice as long, over twice as high and several times the weight with poorer all round visibility.0 -

It was 1st January 1997, and rather than 'the government' per se it was in fact our real government in Brussels who made us change. Her Majesty's Government and the UK Parliament were merely the implementers, obeying a command from above.
Obtaining a full sized bus licence gives no entitlement to drive goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Bizarre as it seems, you can have a licence to drive 40 children but not one to drive a wardrobe in a 7.5 tonner. Euro-logic for you.paddedjohn wrote: »Whats wrong with having to take a test for a different catagory? if you pass your test in a car you shouldnt automatically be entitled to drive a truck, that would be as mad as passing your bike test and getting bus entitlement. 7.5 tonne trucks are a different beast to a car and need a whole different set of skills to handle safetly.

Well, only that categories are completely arbitrary. 'C1' and 'D1' didn't exist until the EC invented them in the 1990s. Before, in this country, the ability to drive minibuses and horseboxes, with trailers, was taken for granted on passing of a car test. Back when the car test was rather less rigorous than now.
What is so special about 3500 kilogrammes? And what's so special about a vehicle having more than 8 passenger seats? Why are those arbitrary numbers any better than the previous, equally arbitrary numbers of 7500 kg and 16 passenger seats?
Many people would argue that it is far from 'safe' for a 17-year-old to pass their test in a mini, and then get straight in to a 3500 kg Land Rover towing a 750 kg trailer.
Anything, literally anything can be argued on the grounds of 'safety'.
Unfortunately a line has to be drawn somewhere. It would just have been nice for the line to have been based on some sort of scientific evidence and understanding of day-to-day life and not on some nice round numbers dreamed up by a few foreign bigwigs with their own chauffeurs.0
