Yeah get this quite often in branch
To be fair though, and no offence intended to the posters on this thread (who will, incidentally, be sadly missed if they decide not to post), there are an awful lot of uninformed advisors in branches.

For example, I opened a LTSB current account and regular saver recently in branch. The advisor 'advising' me hadn't even heard of their Save the Change promotion. This is despite her walking past two advertising billboards on the precinct outside the branch on her way into work, a sign in their window(!), national press advertising, and the details being on their own website. Unbelievable!

There could have be reasons such as the person being on holiday. - But yeah sometimes internal communications needs to be be better - and internal communications be read - but to be honest when do you get the time working in a bank.

Also there are different bank positions. I know about mortgages due to my role, but a cashier would not. Then there are financial advisers who know about their investments ect, but a banking adviser would not as they don;t give advice. In vice versa - the financial advisers would not know about bank accounts as this is not their product area and they would refer if need be.

To be honest you can work in the bank for years - not know everything as things change all the time, and not everything comes up on a day to day basis. I'm sure this would happen in other jobs?

The people that can in return get the better service are the ones that listen though - and not say they know the banks policies.

Bank staff have not got to put up with abuse -sometimes they try to help, but get no where as some do not want to listen and want things done their way, that maybe the system does not allow.

I personally think this cash cheque with at RBOS is odd, as it doesn't happen at my place - but its not the staff's fault, and they know their systems

I object to being called a prat for just stating the rip off methods NatWest say are company policy.

Its time the banking system pulled itself into the 21st century instead of using antiquated methods to their own benifit.
  • I would agree that the system is outdated, but what can I do, I only work there and was trying to explain it from an experienced point of view, which is surely what you wanted when you first posted this thread.
You called the manager a robot and the cashier lazy, they were just doing their jobs they cannot change the computers.
  • Amanda- you have worked in a system that was outdated when cash went in overnight (2002 finally moved to real time banking). The system of real time banking for cash is not outdated but the way the a cashier specifically informs a customer is the issue. Mr mews, i thought the comment of you being a prat was harsh, at the end of the day you wanted information. I should say though that if you banked with NatWest at the turn of this century you would know what outdated systems we did have. We are more modern and there will be further things coming in this year as with all banks. I would like all other bank workers who know how a system of paying both cash and cheques together on one paying in slip, inform me how the cash is on the account immediately ie real time even though part of the credit contains a cheque? I know how NatWest/RBS works but would like some further info on other banks.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

you say you wanted to know if this happens in other banks:

It does not happen in Halifax or Bank of Scotland, but I think it does in Barclays and Lloyds Tsb

If we're talking about deposits made at the counter then in Abbey you can pay cheques and cash in on one slip and the cash is credited immediately. The cheque also appears on your account immediately but obviously as uncleared funds.

  • At Lloydstsb cash is cleared funds immediately as is personal cheques drawn on the bank (where there is sufficent cleared funds to pay and has not been stopped).
Your balance is updated immediately with total of credit but business cheques and cheques drawn on other banks will not be available until cleared.
  • As far as I was aware this is indeed how it works at Natwest and I can't remember it being otherwise, though it's fairly rare that I pay in cash and cheques at once (in these days of online banking, it's fairly rare that I pay in anything at all over the counter).

Last time I did so was around six months ago, and I distinctly remember the Natwest cashier informing me that this would be the case, and would I like the cash and cheque to be done separately instead? Which I accepted, therefore cash was immediately available, cheque was not.

    Excellent service.

As far as I remember from when I worked there 2 years ago, HSBC have the cash clears with cheques system.

Personally it's not a problem, actually quite amusing when I paid in a sum of cash and then made them process a separate deposit for a cheque of 10p!
