Hi weymuffred, don't know if this will help, the best (of a lot of bad) options I could see on thetrainline.com was Weymouth to Southampton Central; then Southampton Central to Oxford; and then Oxford to Manchester. Other routes were: Weyouth to Bristol; Bristol to Birmingham New Street; Birmingham New Street to Manchester. The last 2 seem to be available relatively cheaply, the main problem seems to be getting out of the south west unless you live in Bristol (by any mode of transport - I currently live in Exeter but my family is up in the north east so I regularly face the joys of road/rail/air!). Other options might be Weymouth to Bristol; Bristol to Coventry; Coventry to Manchester though I couldn't quite work out if this was cheaper or more expensive than the first suggestion; OR you could try Weymouth to Gloucester, Gloucester to Manchester. Hope one of these routes works out for you - best wishes.

Hi,
Can anyone help me in finding the best option with regards to splitting tickets for a journey from preston to oxford????
my friend and I are taking the trip - i have a railcard, he doesn't, though it may be advisable for him to get on?
it is £43.10 with a railcard, £65 without!
any help would be very much appreciated!!
thanks in advance0 -
If you split the journey it's going to cost you MORE as even a cheap day return to Darlington is £4 and Darlington to London is at least £9.80 each wayspudfish wrote:I want to travel from Middlesbrough to London in mid-march, my problem is that i dont do this route often - can anyone suggest stations to split tickets with?
Book over the GNER website and Middlesbrough to London is from £11.55 each way.0 -

Preston - Oxford saver return is £65.30 (as you say).
Preston - Wolverhampton saver return = £33.40
Wolverhampton - Oxford saver return = £26.00
total = £59.40.
Think railcards just give a straight 1/3 off, so above savings should stand up with your card. Can't comment if it's worth putting your friend onto a railcard.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
The Cardiff to London open return has got even more expensive recently at £144.
Saver return can be bought for £54 but this obviously limits the times you can travel.
I've been trying for hours to get a good split ticket - cardiff - reading, reading to london. cardiff - bristol, bristol to london, cardiff - swindon, swindon - london. The fares aren't much different, am I doing this wrong?
Any successful Cardiff - London split ticketing journeys found?__________________________________

And if you can't get this price - which is excellent - then try splitting the Darlo - London journey at Peterborough. You must find a train that stops at Peterboro, but stay on it to London. You then buy Boro - Pb, and Pb - London.
This has worked for me a lot on the GNER - London route
but GNER aren't even shortlisted for the new franchise - later this year or 2008... BOOHOO0 -
My mom wanted to go from Wolverhampton to Great Yarmouth and was quoted £66.20 for a saver return. However if she does the following using the same trains it works out much cheaper
OAP Travel Pass - Wolverhampton to Birmingham - FREE
SINGLE Birmingham to Peterborough - £8.00 x 2
SAVER RETURN Peterborough - Great Yarmouth £18.00
Total cost: £34.00
Saving of £32.20
And if she purchases a railcard it will bring the cost down to £22.50
Not bad as she does this journey 4 times a year!
What a wonderful site this is!!0 -
Any suggestions on how to split this route? Have always flown over so far so no idea as to train journey.
