  • part of the wording on this petition is to personal and not general enough,i would suggest that even if a million people signed it nothing would happen as the govt has a long term contract with atos

While I somewhat agree with the petition, the problem isn't ATOS!

The problem is that the regulations _are_ tick-box - and whoever implements them will have the same issues.

    2. Standing and sitting.
    a. Cannot move between one seated position and another seated position located next to one another without receiving physical assistance from another person. (15 points)
    b. Cannot for the majority of the time remain at a workstation, either:
    i) standing unassisted
ii) Sitting (even in an adjustable chair) for more than 30 minutes before needing to move away in order to avoid significant discomfort or exhaustion.

    (9 points)

These sorts of criteria are the very essence of tick-boxes, and going from ATOS to another body, paid or not will not fix this.
The only way to truly fix ESA (or UC or ...) is to get away from all these tick-boxes.

Some form of into-work assistance that did not discriminate against people on the grounds of their disability, or risk them losing their benefits if they try to work.

A component for increased daily living expenses.

Start out with an assessment of the person as a whole - the ESA50 isn't a truly terrible starting point.

Then an interview for everyone a week or so after the form is received - unless this would make their condition worse.

This would lead on to a process where an assessment was made of the person, their skills, and the job market.

If you can't get out of bed all day, but are otherwise competent - there are any number of jobs you could do in theory - if attendance at an office weren't mandatory.

The problem with the existing maze of sorting people into 'can work' and 'can't work' isn't so much that sorting - it's the lack of help for those on the actual margins of ability, in real life.

The work capacity assessment paints a rosy picture of the workplace, where someone who can learn to put washing away after running a washing machine, who gets lost on the way to work once a week, and who can't really understand what strangers are saying other than the simplest messages, is fully fit for work.

I'd have no problem with this at all - if combined with finding them fit for work, they also had to find them suitable work.

    So?
Her comments are unfortunate, and unprofessional.

Is this sort of comment widespread around the office and condoned by managers?
Or is it something that would not be approved of by 'the culture'.

Is there an effective review process of decisions, and sufficient benchmarking to make sure she's not failing a disproportionate number of people?

ATOS, or people making profit in the sector isn't the problem.

The 'Maureen' stereotype lampooned in comedy has basis in fact, all the way back to the workhouses and beyond.

The problem is how to free up the people at the sharp end, so they can make sensible decisions about peoples health, while providing them some regulatory guidance to ensure consistency throughout the country.
Needless to say, this is hard.

But Atos introduced the ‘Logic Integrated Medical Assessment’ (LiMA) software, so the problem is with Atos....

The programme was introduced by DWP’s contractor Atos Origin in 2005.

It's because it's a petition to the Government, they have to be able to verify that you are a genuine signatory - otherwise people could sign it multiple times with bogus names to inflate the number of signatories. The email address is needed to receive the email with a link to click to confirm your signature, if you don't confirm by clicking the link your signature doesn't count.
