Some of my friends went to Skiathos in September last year and although they raved about the Island, they said the weather was not great and mainly overcast.
Those reviews you have seen may be from other people who went last September, but it could have been a one-off as most other greek areas are still pleasant then.
I went to Rhodes 2003 for the first 2 weeks of October and it was very nice weather, but the locals did say that this wasn't always the case.0 -
Love Rhodes I stayed in Ixia when I got married there. Rhodes old town is stunning and lots of lovely places to eat.0

Thanks again for your replies.
Not sure we can risk Skiathos if its going to rain all the time
Loved Rhodes in Greece but don't want to go back there 2 years in a row so that rules that out...
Can anyone recommend somewhere in Cyprus? We loved the tavernas, restaurants and lovely beaches in Greece and want something similar - could Cyprus be suitable? I have heard conflicting things about Cyprus and that its extremely touristy and commercialised - please put me right if I have this incorrect!
Thanks for your help

It's incorrect
But, it's not an uncommon view either. Go to Ayia Napa or parts of Paphos or even villages that are full of expats and you'd struggle to remember you were in Cyprus.
But there are dozens of gorgeous little traditional villages with beautiful villas or restored old stone houses where locals will invite you in for fresh lemonade while you talk to their donkey ... you get the picture, I'm sure. With a hire car it's possible to be in those villages but also have easy access to lovely beaches and be able to explore.
Googling Agrotourism in Cyprus and you might get some ideas of the type of older property that is available for rent. Villages like Tochni, Maroni, Psematismenos, Lefkara, Scarinou* are all worth a look. All are between Larnaca and Limassol so about 30-45 minutes from Larnaca airport. Governor's beach is 20 minutes drive from most of them. All of those villages have a reputation for having maintained a traditional feel, not been overwhelmed by Brits and being relatively welcoming.
Something like this (images shameless acquired from a site I've never heard of!)

Is that, maybe, something other than the image you had in your mind?

* They've recently built a McDs at the junction with the highway, but it's still a super village so maybe that could be overlooked?0 -
For Greece in the latter half of September, the weather is much better the further south east you go. The Dodecanese Islands (eg Rhodes, Kos) and Crete are more likely to have less chance of rain than the Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos) and the Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia).
If you liked Rhodes, then Kos is worth considering. Loads to see there history wise, decent beaches, but do pick where you go carefully to avoid the chips and beer brigade.
Or Turkey?0 -
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
Have had a look at various options and it seems that most places are quite expensive the week we want to go (6th-13th September).
I think if we can get a good deal, we will try Skiathos, as that's where our heart is set on going, but otherwise we will try Cyprus and save Skiathos for another time.
Now just got to try and find a good deal on flights - its currently looking at £500 per person!!
Thanks for all your comments,
