Where to go in September for some sunshine?!

Hiya

Me and my boyfriend (aged late 20's and early 30's) are looking for a last minute 1 week break in the sun.

We would like to fly out around 6-8th September from any London or Birmingham/East Midlands airport.

We were hoping to get something around the £500 mark each for a week's self catering (not including spending money), is this do-able?

We are looking ideally for somewhere sunny, nice beaches, good restaurants/bars (not into clubbing tho) and maybe a nice bit of scenery. Don't want to end up anywhere too rowdy/18-30's and prefer somewhere a bit more 'authentic' than somewhere with lots of British pubs and Maccy D's ;)
We went to Lindos in Greece last October and absolutely loved it there...

Does anyone have any suggestions of where might fit the bill?

Thanks for your help!
Lea

Santa Eulalia in Ibiza is really pretty, classy and quiet (other side of the island to the Clubs)

We prefer to take our hols in Septemeber too and this is what i have found over the last couple of years:

My hubby and I got married 4 years ago in Lindos in September and we love it there! We are hoping to go back there in Sept - I have seen quite a few deals around £300 pp on Thomas Cook and Thomsons for Rhodes so try those sites ( but they were manchester flights). Weather is still hot - even towards the end of the month ( or it was when we were there!)

Skiathos is also a nice Greek island - we went there 5 years ago in the first week of september and it was lovely weather i'd say 28 - 32 degrees, and really calm. The people there told us that the season slows at the end of August there - but we were not stuck for things to do. Everywhere was still open etc, its just that nowhere was rammed with people. They have a nice marina too in Skiathos, and it tends to attract lot of Italians on holiday there - or at least that was the impression I got. Nice laid back atmosphere with nice bars to go in in Skiathos town itself. Not a massive island though, but if you want to relax and have a few drinks in the evening, spend a little time people watching, you will enjoy it!

We went to Alcudia in Majorca 2 years ago and it was torrential rain for 4 days out of the 7!! Awful - ruined the holiday and we had a one year old to entertain!! I much preferrred the Greek islands - although i do have friends who say the opposite to its all just down to personal taste!

Good luck with the holiday search, hope you find something you like!

    Hi lea

definitely possible, depending on your standards i suppose!

boyfriend and i booked 2 weeks self catering in Ixia last night (just outside rhodes old town) for £650 for the pair of us, all in.

went through thomascook, although it's actually a thomson holiday (thomson website was so unbearable over the weekend that we gave up!)

we're 31 and were looking for exactly the same thing - seems like it has a few bars and restaurants, and is only a 2 mile walk/2 euro bus ride into rhodes old town for livelier nightlife if we want it a couple of nights.

we originally fancied crete as it has a bit more variety on offer for heading off in a car/moped - ancient sites, mountain villages etc, but were priced out. but if you have £500 each you could probably get something nice there.

though if you're doing 1 week then perhaps you're not so bothered about days out, more maximum relaxing?!

    good luck with it

    BS x

ps lea/ca1980: out of interest, how busy did you find Rhodes in late September/early october? we're going the last 2 weeks of september - am wondering if we're going to be making our own fun in some of those tavernas?!

We were a party of 24 in total, so usually there were at least 4-6 of us when we went out for drinks or something to eat. I don't remember us being the only people in the bars by any means but nor were people queueing to get in places if that helps - however that was before the recession hit so things may have changed somehow and maybe some of the smaller tavernas may have born the brunt of it? I hope not tho!

I also loved Rhodes and into October the weather was great... the season seems to end early October and as we were leaving a lot was shutting up shop- Maybe this year they ll need to stay open a bit longer. Crete is a good choice and if you like not too much to do I really loved Kefalonia, tho it was more expensive eating out there and on a par with Cyprus costs.

    Hi

Many thanks for all your replies and suggestions.

Re: what is Rhodes like in October - we went last year 9th-16th October and stayed in Lindos. Unfortunately they had unusually bad weather for the time of year (apparantly the worst in 20 years!) and there was torrential rain and thunderstorms! Trying to navigate round the cobbles of Lindos was very tricky as it was so slippery! But apart from that, it was around 26 degrees I would say, sunny but a bit cloudy. All the rooftop restaurants were still busy, but you could tell it wasn't peak season. Things had started to slow down. Still fab though!

Thanks for the suggestion of Skiathos, we really like to look of this island. It seems to be coming in at least £500 each though for a week's self catering which is a lot more that we paid for for Lindos, is it just generally more of an expensive island or is it because we are going in September?

    Many thanks,
    Leanne

    Hi again

So....we were about to book Skiathos but were on tripadvisor and read that the weather can be really hit and miss in September. Some people have said they had rain their whole holiday! As its our one holiday of the year, we really don't want to be washed out!

Does anyone else have any experience of Skiathos in September, or can anyone recommend somewhere just as nice but with better weather for us?

    Thanks again,
    Lea
