I see Talk Mobile which piggy backs on Vodafone are doing a £1 a month 30 days sim only deal.
25 mins
50 texts
Only available via Carphone Warehouse Stores.

Might suit low users.
If you exceed the allowance things get a bit pricey. 30p a minute call . 14p a text

Not bad at all to keep for occasional use.0

My mum and auntie are doing this, they top up every 3-6 months. It's ideal for them. Love this deal.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0

Definitely great for the very low user, but only the very low user.
They will be expecting to make a profit on this deal through the people that go over the free allowances.
Just based on just minutes, the first 25 might be inclusive, but if you end up using another 5 additional minutes then you've spent more than the equivalent of the 8p a minute on Talkmobile's essentials SIM (or TescoLite, FamilyMobile, Giffgaff etc). If you use less than 12 minutes a month the PAYG option is chepaer anyway.
Just based on just texts, the first 50 might be inclusive, but if you end up using another 15 additional texts then you've spent more that the equivalent of the 4p a text on Talkmobile's essentials SIM (or Tescolite, FamilyMobile, Giffgaff etc). If you use less than 25 texts a month the PAYG option is cheaper anyway.
The actual maths is a little more complicated as, of course, the deal includes a combination of both texts and minutes and usage will vary month to month.
If you use 25 minutes and 50 texts, £1.00 is of course a bargain - this usage would cost £4.00 even on the essentials (or equivalent) PAYG tarrif.
But just edge over those limits to 31 minutes and 67 texts, suddenly the monthly bill rises to £4.98, where it now meets the PAYG option, which has only increased to £5.00 for this usage.
Notch up again very slightly to 37 minutes and 80 texts, the monthly bill is £8.80, whilst the PAYG option is leading now at only £6.16 for the same usage.
If you always use somewhere between 12 and 31 minutes a month, whilst sending between 25 and 67 texts every month, this tariff will save you money.
Higher or lower usage will be better off on one of the PAYG 8p/4p options, or perhaps alternative PAYG providers (like icardmobile)
The deal would only be worth recommending to anyone who either (i) values a monthly bill rather than topping up and/or (ii) can confidently say that they will very rarely exceed their allowance, and when they do, only very modestly. If (ii) can't be said for certain, this seeming bargain could turn out to be a really nasty bite on the bum.0 -

Where do you get the 67 texts from , seem san strange number, people do use the handsets minimally, I have a PAYG for work, topped it up for £10, but that will only last 40 mins, who's gonna miss £1/month?0 -

It's the approximate cross-over boundary where the PAYG option becomes cheaper.
You are right, people do use handsets minimally - like me! I never go over my free 50 minutes a month.
You're right that the low £1/month is an attractive hook, but you are also right that the 40 minutes you get for a £10 top-up is pretty naff. If you switch to any of the 8p/min options for a start, that £10 becomes 125 minutes - but importantly 125 minutes to use whenever you need to. If you use 25 a month, it will last 5 months - costing £2 a month, so yes, 100% more that this deal. If you only use 10 minutes a month, that £10 top up will last over a year - which is of course less than £1 month.
But more importantly than a few pennies each month, if you unexpectedly end up on the phone a bit longer than normal - and we really are talking just a little bit - 31 minutes costs the same with this deal (£1 line rental and (6x30p) £1.50 excess calls) as with 8p/min PAYG (31x8p= £2.48).
That's why, if we're just looking at minutes, the £1 deal is only going to save money for anyone who always has usage somewhere between 12 minutes and 31 minutes each and every month. Where usage can often be higher or lower, any of the 8p/min tariffs work out better.0 -
Damn, i wish there was something like this for data. Just 50mb a month would be great for my spare phone.0
