Best way to take spending money to USA

We go to California on the 19th of August and will need cash when we are they to pay for meals etc.
In the past when we have gone to Florida we have taken about £300 in dollars and the rest in travellers cheques, but I am now reading TCs are old-fashioned and I'm not sure how easily accepted they would be in California.
I'm not too keen on the prepaid cards where you load cash as I read on the MSE guide that they are not 100% guaranteed if the company goes bust and should only be used for smaller cash amounts.
My debit card is with Santander and my credit card is Sainsburys.
I know everyone calls the Santander card the "card from hell" but what exactly would it cost to withdraw say £300 from a USA atm?
Should I trust the prepaid cards or just take a smaller amount of dollars and put everything else on the credit card?
I feel like I'm going round in circles, when in the past it was easy with a few dollars and rest in TCs.
Any suggestions, thanks?
