Best PAYG Sim for use travelling across Europe

So basically, I am going interrailing across Europe (France, Spain, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia) and I need to take a mobile with me to keep in contact with the family.
I have an unlocked phone which I am planning on taking but I am trying to work out the cheapest way of using it? Does anyone know of any loopholes? Or just the cheapest SIM to take with me to contact back home?
