  • His reasoning was-we would be able to source it cheaper from a local firm than from where he gets it from. Seemed very genuine about it, we are working with a pretty strict budget and he wanted as much as possible for the kitchen...

Good for him. He probably realises that if he quotes for solid surface as well, he may well lose the entire job as his company (like many do), put a considerable mark up on what the fabricators charge for both the material and labour. By going direct to a fabricator you will save yourself money, and he may save the sale on the rest of the kitchen.

I do this myself when budget requirements suffice. Yes it is better to work with fabricators you trust, but not if the mark up kills the sale.
  • Alan M, we liked the look of a "leather" granite in the kitchen showroom, made by a company called Sensa, in a browny colour (think it was brazillian brown, but that might have been the silestone colour we liked) What is your opinion on the leather finish-would we be better off with a polished finish?

Sensa is a brand marketing name for granite products manufactured by the Cosentino Group - (Silestone).

It's nice, it's basically a kind of antique finish and is a personal aesthetic thing rather than being "better" than polished.

It will be telephone numbers though as regards price. It never fails to astonish me how Cosentino stay in business charging what they charge for their products that are freely available elswhere in other well known brands.

Your kitchen designer has probably come to the conclusion that quoting you £10,000 or something silly for worktops is likely to get you shopping elsewhere.
  • Thanks Alan, I think you're right, we are on a tight budget and we won't be able to get what we want from his suppliers at the right price he says. Is Silestone very expensive too then?
We have about 2.5k for the tops-do you think that is possible? Is the non-polished look easily available & is there any difference in maintenence? We think we want a browny coloured top, although I'm not that keen on Baltic brown, its that sort of colour we are looking for-do you have any recommendations?

Is there any chance you can double check the measurements? I've been trying to work out the size of the wall that the cooker is on, but I can't get it to tally with the opposite wall where the USA F/F is...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

  • Its 2600mm. I have to admit the unit sizes were a guess (we don't have a fixed plan with exact numbers on it) Thats my very poor attempt at a drawing:o (art is not my strong point, I can sew up a dog very nicely though :D)
