Went to get some engine oil from Asda yesterday as it was reduced from £16 to £10. Got it to the till and it scanned as £7.50. Went and got another couple to keep in for future. Got to be the cheapest 5litres of oil around. Its 5W40 for older Diesel cars :money:

It's a good price. What brand is it?
We had a little discussion about where to get cheap oil from on another thread. And I will just say, that in France each supermarket has a brand of cheap oil.
They sell 5 litres 15W40 for 7 Euro, 7.50Euro or 8Euro depending which supermarket you go to.
I'll be trying some on my car soon.0 -
it all depends on what car it is going in whether cheap or not.
if it is going in some old conventional diesel then ideal, but if it is going in a newer diesel engine then it could work out more expensive if it causes some damage.
i certainly would not put it in my VW PD engine.0 -
Is the Petrol stuff (10w40) this price too does anyone know? Just paid £12 for Tesco's own brand stuff :mad:0

They didn't have any petol oil at Huddersfield today, only diesel...You could always scan it at self service and check the price that way.
I'm sure i mentioned in my post that it was only for older cars!!!0 -

Don't worry about it - typical oil thread - you get 42,000 people saying "OMFG IT'S NOT CASTROL UBER SYNTHETIC 10w4we303w3453 AT £400 A LITRE, IT MUST BE USELESS"0 -

Thanks for that. I got some for my van, a knackered old astra that runs on whatever I put in it including used cooking oil, bio-diesel etc.0 -

Exactly!
An older car has seen a lot more wear and tear, is probably not built to the same tolerances as a newer model, and it will probably burn more oil.
A new high performance diesel, will demand more from the oil, in order that it warms up correctly and runs at the correct operating temperature in most conditions. This is turn will protect the engine from excessive wear, making it more reliable and economic.
Anyone who doubts this, should take a look at old Top Gear tests, when they run old cheap cars, and see how much power they have lost over the years. Much of this is down to excessive wear in the engine, cause by lack of maintenance and using good quality oil.0 -
For any car in the 'bit of an old banger' category, bang in the cheapest stuff you can find.''apply within''0
