I already have a set of ecotools, as it was the best value for money set that my local boots had to offer at the time.

so you would recommend a proper brush rather than those sponge applicators?

Yup, can take a few goes to get used to but sooooo much easier once you are used to them! Plus more hygienic as can be washed better, plus a brush doesn't soak things up the same (oils from your skin etc).

I mostly use the brush in the standard ecotools set, but they also do a set of 4 or 5 eyeshadow brushes.

also, in the spirit of sharing useful youtube links, I've REALLY enjoyed the makeupchair (right level of step-by step for my needs and the host is not an annoying airhead :D )and I've also found emilynoel83 to be informative. I love Lisa Eldridge, so naturally beautiful.

if you're still looking for a good neutral eyeshadow palette, then Urban Decay's "Naked" pallette is an absolute lifesaver...I read all the amazing reviews, but still ummed and ahhed over whether to get it. Eventually I did and it's been one of the best makeup investments I've ever made...I use it just about every day and it's totally foolproof - impossible to mess up (plus it comes with a brush).

Mascara wise, for ease of application I love Givenchy's "Phenomeneyes" (it also looks fab) but have just moved to Estee Lauder Double Wear lengthening after trying a MaxFactor one that I was apparently allergic to (red, itchy eyes). Was a bit sceptical as the brush for the mascara is a bit naff, but in actual fact it works really well, so I am a happy bunny :). If you're not allergic to MaxFactor, their mascara's are also good (and half the price!).

I've learned over the years that it's much better to invest in a small number of good quality products (once you know what works for you) rather than buying loads of cheap products.

Useful tip I was shown at a make up counter is to kind of 'tap' the bottom lashes with mascara so that it adds a little bit of definition. hth x

    1. Curling eyelashes
I found a great tutorial on youtube (Can't post link due to being new, but search gossmakeupartist- the video is called How To: Keep your eyelashes curled all day-instantly) He says that you should curl your eyelashes then apply a tiny and I mean tiny amount of waterproof mascara and then curl again. Its such a tiny amount that it won't snap your lashes or go weird. Then apply your normal mascara. Because the waterproof mascara is gel based it curls better and the curl last all day. Normal mascaras are water based. Maybelline have an offer on at the moment like 3 for 2 on all products in superdrug I think. I love maybelline mascara they are the best high street brand I feel for mascara.

    2. Applying mascara

I find wiping the excess mascara from the wand and then brushing the wand on the lower eyelashes works the best. Or just don't dunk your wand back into the pot when you coated your top lashes, so there is just a smidge of mascara on the wand.
This way they don't clump and you don't get it all under your eye. It gets easier with time. Just have a baby wipe on hand to wipe any mistakes away.

    3. Eyeshadow Palettes

If you just started to experiment with makeup I wouldn't be getting tons of eyeshadows or makeup. Start simple and with the basics and master these before moving on to more dramatic styles. What colour eyes do you have and skin?
Warm golds and browns work with blue eyes and purples work excellent with green eyes and so on.

However I recently bought a makeup pallet from ELF (amazing and cheap website) and it has lots of shades of eyeshadow (and fantastic pigment). I am studying makeup professional in september and wanted to practise different looks.
Its called -6 In 1 Beauty To Go
(Hopefully someone post you a link, its under the eye section)
"Create up to 6 different eyes, lips and face with these convenient go-anywhere palettes. Includes single palette colours: Pretty picnic, Date night, Beach retreat, Party perfect, Happy hour and Shopping spree!"

One of the pallets has like earth colours like beiges, creams and browns eyeshadows. Another has bright colours and another one has dark colours like blacks, dark blues etc, you get the idea. It has everything you need in one small pallet for whatever look you trying to create that day. Also so compact it fits into basically every bag so great for when your out and want a quick retouch.
For only £10 you can't go wrong.

I second the Urban Decay Naked Pallette as its amazing but slightly pricey. You can get it on flights or duty free for just under £20 though so maybe if your going on holiday soon you could invest in this.

But defo check out that Gossmakeupartist on youtube he is amazing and he isn't an airhead or try sell you products he makes, just good honest tips. I also love Lauren Luke but she concentrates on eyes mostly and I have naturally hooded lids so can't do much with my eyes.

good luck for the course Rach and thanks for taking the time to offer advice on my 2 threads.

With regards to the pallette, I bought one in H&M because it was reduced to clear and going for pennies. It had loads of different colours and is actually reasonable quality for the price I paid. As I find colours I like, I aim to buy individual shadows in a better quality brand. In the mean time i'm quite enjoying having the range of colours to practise with.

thanks to all for your advice. Since I started the thread a year ago I thought I ought to update a bit... I've now got the knack of curling my lashes (i no longer blind myself in the process  :D) and I'm much more confident applying mascara. Still trying to perfect eye liner (especially applying it to the lash line of my upper lid) but I'm getting the hang of it slowly.
