The ELF website is good for cheap and cheerful stuff...
http://www.eyeslipsface.co.uk/
I have bought some stuff from them like brushes, nail varnish etc. Not so sure about the make up as I have sensitive skin but may try the odd bit as it is so cheap it won`t break the bank if it doesn`t suit me.0 -
All my eyeshadows are palettes....
I'm still very much at the point where I am learning and experimenting (late 20s btw) I never even tried makeup until about 2 years ago.
I've gone one massive pallette - it has something silly like 120 different colours and as I use them and experiement I'll see which ones go down quickest and whats worth buying individually. Cost all of about £6 on ebay.Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
i too would suggest " beauty Uk" palettes or MUA from superdrugs. cheap but pigmented too. good range of colours. beautyuk have a website too and they have a lovely neutral palette - some matt shades too.
practice makes perfect!0 -
TBH superdrug is one place i never think to look because i live near a huge boots. Will be going into town this week so will have a gander and see what I can find to experiment with. thanks for the advice.
as for the thought of going near my eyes of HOT curlers  I'm not sure i trust myself, i blink enough when i know they're cold!!!
watched a few Lauren Luke vids on youtube - would never have thought that wearing glasses would affect the type of eye make up I should wear, so learnt something new there - matt, low shimmer, low mascara (good - thats all i can manage :rotfl:)
cheers for the tips so far :Tknow thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
hi instead of using eyelash curlers and then mascara what about a double ended mascara like maybelline xl, one end is white put this on and it lengthens (they do a curl version) and thickens the eyelashes and the other end is black so just go over the white layer with the black, if you do the white layer a couple of times before the black coat then lovely long almost proper false lash effect - sometimes i take mine off and think where have my eyelashes gone LOL! - also bare escentuals (dept stores or qvc) have lovely loose eyeshadows that can also be used with a slightly damp brush as eyeliner so two products in one:)0

well almost a year on and i'm still at it and slowly gaining confidence (bought my first ever foundation and concealer today. feel like such a girl
).
eyeshadow applicators - how frequently should they be cleaned or replaced?know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -

I'm very much a tomboy going through a girly phase. I'm mid 20s and have only just started becoming remotely interested in make up so many of my questions are going to be rather elementary!
I don't like the heavily made up look at all but I am liking the way a simple bit of eye make up can really add to my look. I'm blind as a mole without my glasses and have zero hand eye coordination to add to the fun of applying anything, but I'm slowly trying to get to grips with different techniques and products. I know that there are lots of make up and beauty aficiondos here so i'm hoping you can teach me a trick or two and answer some questions.
1. Curling eyelashes
I've noticed that this is getting marginally easier with practise, but I cant seem to get my eyelashes significantly more curled than their natural state. Is this likely to be due to my technique, my curlers (No7 ones bought during the £5 voucher offer recently)or do some peoples' lashes just not curl as well as others'?
I would suggest investing in a mascara with a big thick brush. It helps curl them a little more. If you have particularlly straight lashes, I would suggest using curlers, mascara, leave to dry, curlers, more mascara. It's all about layers
2. Applying mascara
I'm really cack handed and applying mascara to my lower lashes, especially on my left eye (i'm right handed) is a particular struggle. Any hints on technique or ways to make this easier?
I'm exactly the same. The best thing to do is do your left eye first. Rather than pointing the stick <
that way, point it up. Gently brush your lashes, and watch what your doing, Slowly is the key! Then do the same with the right. Practice practice!
3. Eyeshadow Palettes
are these worth it, and if so, any recommendations for where to get good ones? I came a bit unstuck tonight as fancied wearing eyeshadow ( albeit fairly neutral) to compliment my look, but the only colours I had were unsuitable as they didn't go with my outfit.
is an eyeshadow palette in the range of colours your nnormally wear fashion wise a good investment, or am I better off building up a stock of individual colour palletes?
I'm quite gothic, so rather having tons of colours of pastel shades I will never use, I have a white, purple, pink, black, and brown. You can sweep them into each other too. If you put white in the inner corners of your eyelids and a darker colour on the outside and sweep with a clean finger from the white to the colour, it'll blend well. I don't think the pallates are great. Browns are great for starting with as is purples. It all depends on your eye colour.
any other pearls of wisdom gratefully received
I do my make up in this order:
Clean face with cold water on flannel
Apply cover stick to any particularly red spots
put foundation on (i used rimmel liquid foundation, really light!)
Then eyebrow pencil
then I put on cover dust to take the shine of the foundation out and help blend the eyebrows in more naturally
(Do NOT sneeze for next parts... :rotfl:)
Then eye shadow
Then eye liner
Then Mascara
Then lipstick
PD xx

I would only recommend using a mascara with a bigger brush if you have a decent set of eyelashes. Mine are really sparse & I find if I use mascara with a big brush, it tends to go through the lashes onto my lids. So I stick with a small brush.
Good tip for applying mascara to the bottom lashes is to get one of those little interdental brushes, rub the mascara wand onto the bristles & apply. Simple & easy. Also saves you buying a bottom lash mascara.
As someone else has already mentioned, there are some really good tutorials on youtube. Many show how to do makeup if you wear glasses.
I recommend Pixiwoo, Lisa Eldridge & Gossmakeup artist. There are many more.0 -
I wouldn't use eyelash curlers after applying mascara as it can pull your eyelashes out!0

CongratsI started using makeup at 17 (closer to 18) so missed out on the stage where girls were learning together at school :rotfl:
Personally, I'd suggest buying a nice brush or 2 - I love ecotools ones (look on ebay) and they get favourable reviews against brands like MAC. Wash when needed with a little shampoo, rinse wellI've got some no.7 ones but they're nowhere near as good - if you're unsure of spending out on likes of ecotools (though they're relatively cheap) then I'd try a cheap £2 sort to see if you get on with it. Brushes are easier to vary application - can go from a light wash to a good colour, or even damp them for super strong colour.
