Do you mean Virtual Memory or space on the C: drive?

What exactly is stated on the message received?

    Can't remember - sorry !

the "user" bit, drill down in windirstat to see where 10GB has gone

you could try running ccleaner to clean up temp files.

and move any big data (not programs/windows files) to the d drive

or you could expand the c: drive to make use of the d drive space, if there is nothing important on the d, (eg system recovery files - what is using up 3GB on d) - before attempting any repartitioning I suggest you do a disk image backup, and make sure you have all the discs available to do a full reinstall if it goes wrong

See if Temp File Cleaner can reclaim anything:

Seems to find more than CCleaner or ATF.

    User bit -

    Stats are as follows

    App data - 4.4gb
    Documents - 2.6gb

    are the main culprits !!

As for expanding C space - how can I do that please ?

Do you have 2 hard drives, or 2 partitions on one drive? this will only work if 2 partitions

first find out what's on d

you really need to backup everything before trying this, and if you have a factory restore partition, it could stop it working, some backup/imaging tools in this thread

if you have actually got 2 physical disks, then you could clone the smaller disk to the bigger one, then swap them around

  • Next time the error message pops up - write it down.

If it says "Your system is running low on virtual memory" it's not a hard drive issue - you're probably running too many programs at once. This can be fixed by buying new RAM.

If the error message says it's the C:/ that's full then you should start using that 180Gb that you've got on drive D:/

When you look in "My Computer" what do you see, does it say C:/ - x number of Gb used out of 40Gb? How full is it now? It normally only alerts you when its 95%+ full.

It was over 95% full !!

I found that stuff that was on the desk top that I had put on the D drive was ALSO on the C drive as well.

So after I had cleared that, I was able to defrag the pc and now have 7.5GB free !! What a difference !

Without the help on here I would still be wondering what to do so many thanks to you all.

you also need to move your Documents folder to your D: drive - this will ensure any photos, music, etc. will be on D:, not bunging up your C: :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

See how you get on with teracopy, the free one of course

    http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php

When you right click a file or folder you choose to copy or move

If the file already exists in the destination a box pops up and then you can choose to overwrite or rename
