I don't work for internet price quoters.

Anyone who is that much of a cheapskate is always going to give you problems IMO.

I produce a reasonable written quote and that is my price. Period. I do not haggle or barter. If I thought I could have done it cheaper, then my original quote would have been cheaper.

There has always got to be enough margin for a wage, company profit and to honour the warranty, something you will find many who undercut any quote will not include, hence when you have problems. nobody answers the phone.

A customer needs to look for best all round value rather than the cheapest price, but then we all know what human nature is like!

Sounds good to me, if you have a detailed quotation and a fixed price it looks like the plumber will have a good contract which will benefit you both. Hope you didnt laugh in his face

I always try and give the customer the cheapest price if possible.
you get what you pay for is not a correct saying for central heating.
some plumbers charge more and miss things off the quote.

    Course it is.

Try telling that to some of my subsequent customers who used a cheaper quote than me, then have had to call me in to put things right after about 6 months.

My £300-£500 more in the original quote pales into insignificance once they get my bill for putting things right :rotfl:

My quotes are normally cheaper than anybody else and my work is to the highest standard. Cheaper can be better, just means less profits that's all.

Noticed a tipping point in the answers..and so waited for further quotes:

    1) £1880: Vailant Ecotec Pro 24/ £1680: Glowworm Betacom 24a with powerflush.
    2) £2200: Valiant Ecotec Pro
    3) £1300: Ideal..and only chem flush..neither of which were requested so discounted.
    4) £2200 Vailant/ £2000 Glowworm.
    5) approx £2300 Valiant...or will let me get all parts off the net and charge just labour...friends have used previously and recommend.

Then again £3300..the guy had such a nice smile...maybe I'll be thick and employ him.
He said it would take 5 days..so he is just very thorough.

Thanks for some of the advice.

So as you can see the spec that Engineers have been working with re quote:

    - Power Flush the central heating system (Fernox Power flushing cleaner F5 included).
    - Remove kitchen units in order to renew the existing 15mm copper pipe to 22mm copper pipe from the meter and connect it to the existing 25mm steel pipe behind the kitchen units.
    - Carry out a tightness test to check the condition of the existing gas steel pipe. (If test is not satisfactory a new installation of gas pipe work will be needed which is not included in this estimate).
    - Remove all system boiler, combined cold and hot water storage tanks and feed & expansion tank.
    - Install new high efficiency combination boiler.
    - Install magnaclean in the central heating system.
    - Put inhibitors in the system to protect it.
    - Commission the boiler.
    - Put back kitchen units (make good)
    - Balance the system.
    - Carry out a Gas Safe check; certificate will be provided.
    - Take away all the rubbish.

    Materials:

    - Vaillant Ecotec pro 24 combi (24KW), 2 years manufactures’ guarantee, hot water 9.4litres per minute @ 35 degrees rising, or
    - Glow-worm Betacom 24A (24KW), 1 years manufactures’ guarantee, hot water 9.4litres per minute @ 35 degrees rising.
    - Built in analogue time and flue kit.
    - Fernox Power flushing cleaner F5.
    - Fernox central heating protector F1. (Inhibitor)
    - Filter Magnaclean.
    - Electrical materials and Plumbing materials.

The price for the labour and materials is £1665 for the Glow-worm Betacom 24A, and £1865 for the Vaillant Ecotec 24 pro combi, we give 1 year guarantee on the installation beside the boiler manufacture’s guarantee.

Apples and pears but still a significant price difference.
Going back to those apples and pears.... I presume the engineer who gave you that last quote has decided Part L1B of the Building Regulations excludes himself and as such is going to ignore the Law and carry out the work without installing a room thermostat or thermostatic radiator valves?
Oh and if you go for the Betacom, make sure the installer fits a trap. It he doesn't, get yourself a CO alarm, you'll need it.

You do not need to replace rad valves, but you are correct on room stat.
