Unmetered query

Options
Wonder if anyone has experience on this? I moved to my current address just over 6 years ago. It's in a rural area, so I'm paying for mains water only but not drainage or sewage, so am already paying the reduced rate.

When I moved in the previous owners of the property told me that the house wasn't on a water meter as Anglian Water were unable to fit a meter, so I never investigated re metering any further.

The other day I was talking to my new neighbours, who informed me that they had asked Anglian to come out to fit a meter, they had (unsurprisingly) been unable to fit the meter, but had then put the neighbours on their lowest metered rating, so they (2 adults + baby, working from home) are paying £7 a month, whereas me (just me, at work all day) is paying £19. I will of course contact Anglian about this, but I wondered if there might be any possibility of any rebate given the fact that I've evidently been overcharged for the last 6 1/2 years. Any thoughts?

You haven't been overcharged, you could have possibly paid less if you had taken the correct action - not the same thing I am afraid.

Had you applied for a meter, you would have been given the option of an assessed charge, like your neighbours.

OFWAT - the water regulator have ruled that there will be no backdating in cases like this - they give the explanation on their website.

If on AMC then when the house exchanges hands it goes back to RV, you need to apply for a meter like Cardew says
  • But - this is what is puzzling me, the previous owners had been told by the water company that it was impossible to fit a meter - so, how come the water company presumably upped the charge when I moved in, even though they must have known that metering was impossible?

Because like i mentioned when it changes hands the next owner automatically reverts to RV, you need to apply again and the inspector will come round and have another look and if no meter can be fitted they will ask you questions about what you use and put you on AMC

Ah, I see - I had no idea that it automatically reverted, so had assumed that I was on the cheapest charge - it doesn't seem quite right that this isn't more obvious in the water company's small print. Anyway I've emailed them about it now, and await developments. Thanks both for your thoughts.

    Hi benregis,

Hope you don't mind me asking, but you say you live in a rural area and don't pay for sewerage. Why is this? We live in a rural area and have to pay for sewerage. We are with Anglian, are unmetered and pay £41 per month for both combined.

    Thanx,
    Candy

Nothing to do with being in a rural area then, the OP simply means that they are not on mains drainage, along with many urban properties too.
