How can this happen in this day and age?
See it from the Nationwide's (?) point of view. For all they know you could already have what you ordered and now are trying to pull a fast one. I'm sure it'll be sorted out. Who did you buy from?0 -

That depends on the pending transaction read my post above.
The halifax had no evidence that the transaction had failed on the website all they saw was two transactins. They did refund the amount instantly but they did say that if the merchant requested the amount would come from the account.0 -
When an auth is taken, the company basically ask the bank/cc 'if we want this money (£xx) can we have it?'
The bank respond yes/no, if its yes then they place a pended/hold on the funds and await collection.
The company will then bank their PDQ/swipe machine and collect funds, usually within 48hrs.
If the company don't collect, such as out of stock, or a failure in the electronic auth system meant they couldn't confirm they had receieved a 'yes' then they won't collect and think its declined.
If the don't collect then your bank remove the auth after one week and will allow you to spend funds again.
The company can take those authorised funds for up to one year.
Hope this helps!0 -
but a bank does have the ability to at least refund the charge which was made earlier that day . my parents bank had no proof of the problems with acers website they just refunded both amounts instantly. But acer could easily have requested the money again that day or as you said even upto a year later.0

Hi,
I'm kind of in the same boat and don't know what to do. I searched Google for UGG boots and went to one of the top three websites. The site looked genuine and the price was really good, when I went through to the payment site 'secure payment online' I entered all my visa debit card details and placed my order. The payment page didn't refresh properly so I wasn't sure if the order had gone through, when I went back to the original website I searched, in vain, for contact details but there was nothing, no email or telephone numbers. I have received NO email confirmation from either the company or the payment company. So less than an hour afterwards I contacted my bank to find out if the payment had been processed and made them aware of my concerns that perhaps this was a bogus website and could the payment be stopped but was told I would have to wait until the payment was taken and then dispute the transaction. The amount taken from my account is also more than I authorised to pay and the company name on the statement is completely different. I have tried to go back into the website today but it no longer exists and I have searched google for the name that appears on my statement but nothing comes up! Bottom line, will my bank (smile.co.uk) be able to get my money back? Would this be considered fraud by my bank? My bank is asking for proof of the purchase/agreed amount but obviously I have nothing (literally) because it is not a legitimate company. Also should I cancel my card in case they try taking other payments from it? Feel very silly to have been taken in like this but both websites had secure logos plastered all over them, and I've only just realised how much UGGs should cost, if I knew that before then perhaps I would have asked the question why are they so cheap!!0 -
how much were the boots?not being nosey but could make a difference0

The amount on the website was £52.95 but the company has actually taken £64.33 from my account. My bank are being so unhelpful, great after 12 years of banking with them!0

The difference in amounts will be due to an exchange rate difference, the company you have paid are probably based in China so it won't be a sterling transaction. If you haven't received the boots after 30 days, or they come and you arent happy with them, then contact your card issuer. They will be fakes, but you might still receive them yet.
I can't believe people still buy from these sites, it's worth doing some research before parting with your money ! There are plenty of threads about fake Uggs etc on here. You can't really blame your bank for your error.0 -

Report your card as compromised (the details have been obtained by a fraudulent site - which they are if they provide counterfeit items etc). Request a new card.
If the transaction goes through (watch your online banking for a good while) then claim it back through your bank. If they continue to be un-helpful formally request they initiate a Visa-Debit chargeback. This is a service they MUST provide and is your right when using a Visa-Debit card for any purchase amount.
If the initial clerk plays dumb ask to speak to a manager as a lot of frontline staff seem to still be unaware of the Visa-Debit Chargeback facility.
You're covered so don't worry.
Just on a side note my GF asks me to checkout a cheap UGG boots site every week or so, I've not found one yet that isn't fake/china based/fraudulent etc.
A .co.uk website is NO guarantee of anything as anyone can purchase them from anywhere in the world.0
