  • thanks first of all for posting all of this great info and I would like to add some of my own.

You do not have to modify the lexmark cartridge at all, only the flap that keeps it in the printer. on my 920, i cut the little piece of plastic that is on the underside of the flap, kinda looks like an upside down shark fin. once that was cut, the cartridge installed perfectly. i just twisted it off with a pair of needlenose pliers and it only took me 3 seconds to do it.

this weill eliminate you having to cut every ink cartridge you buy. i hope this helps.

  • So which Lexmark cartridges work on the Dell a920?

  • Yesterday, I tried the procedure described by chevy on my 720 printer and it worked fine. I used Lexmark 10N0016 (Black) and 10N0026 (Color) You can also get use Lexmark 10N0017 and 10N0027 which are the same cartridges with (apparently) less ink. Since the 920 printer uses the same Dell Cartridges as the 720 (T0529 and T0530), here you go!
  • If i cut off that little peace of plastic under my dell printer's flap that holds the cartrige, will i still be able to use dell cartriges or only lexmark catriges only?

I use lexmark compatibles in mine without a problem
which lexmark cartradge is compatible to dell 720
  • I believe that you would be able to use both brands since you are not doing any damage to the flap other than removing that little piece of plastic. All that piece does is not make the flap close if it is not dell ink.

  • Well folks this is it.

step 1> Buy some ink for peanuts

step 2> dinamite the lid off the cartridge

step 3> oooh look on the lid.... there are three little tubes with sealed ends. Drill these out with a 1.5mm drill or a red hot needle/panel pin so that the holes are big enough to allow the ink bottle filler hyperdermic entry.

step 4> securely glue the lid back on using polystyrene cement [model glue]. ensure a very good fit as it is essential to get a god seal.

step 5> Hold the cartridge down on some newspaper when filling with a 5 drops of each colour. Blue is the hole in the L of Dell, red is the hole in the D and yellow is the hole at the other end. ie

    R...............
    .................
    B..............Y

step 6> Block the holes with a small amount of polyfiller or blue tak. Tape over the plugged holes with small sticky tape pieces. [I actually sealed mine with a hot soldering iron and a blob of melted cotton bud tube. A weanie amount of plastic padding car filler is probably the best method of all] It is essential to get a good seal.

step 7> Allow filler to dry {if used}. print two or three nozzle cleaning jobs.

Ha ha ha! A victory for the little guy.

You now have a cartridge you can refill forever. All you now need to do is unplug the holes and reseal them each time. I recommend using a little ink topped up frequently. I also tend to use a very small syringe when filling to ensure only modest amounts of ink are used.

This method is, as far as I know, universal to all colour cartridges.

 definitely time for a drink. Cheers!
  • I'm not sure I could do all of that. I have found original dell inks here http://www.oyyy.co.uk/section.php?xSec=132&jss
the goods turn up within a day or 2 unlike when i order from Dell.

Have been looking for the answer to the Dell 720 for a while. Ours is a spare printer really that gets little use but needs a new cartridge. Wasn't going to buy from Dell but came up blank for other source or compatibles. Also got confused with different sites having different opinions as to whether Lexmark compatibles fitted or not. Didn't really want to chuck it but was heading that way.

Looks like I'll be trying the remove flap from printer idea.
